SUMMARY:Queering Clay: Free Clay Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Drink some tea in a chilled space with a bunch of other queer people and make some cool clay sculptures 😀 \n\nThis workshop is designed for queer women\, non-binary\, intersex\, and trans+ people (or anyone who is exploring their identity within this bracket). No prior experience of making or working with clay is required!\n\nWe will use a combination of mould-making and sculpting techniques to create ceramic artworks based on parts of our own bodies. The aim of the workshop is to create a safe space for people to enjoy playing with clay\, and explore different ideas we hold about how we relate our queerness to our body. Please be aware that we will be working intimately with our own bodies.\n\nThe way in which you choose to do this is totally up to you; whether that involves full nudity or limiting contact with the clay to only your hands. The most important thing is that everyone feels completely comfortable\, has fun\, and hopefully learns something.

SUMMARY:Altar-native
DESCRIPTION:Altar-native Exhibition: A Journey into East and Southeast Asian Ancestral Heritage in newly opened Ugly Duck Courage Yard \n31st October – 5th November\, The Greenhouse\, Courage Yard\, Shad Thames\, London SE1 2NJ \nCourage Yard with exhibition Altar-native featuring work by nine East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) artists. From October 31st to November 5th\, Altar-native will offer a captivating exploration of ancestral heritage and veneration\, weaving together enigmatic histories and personal journeys through diverse artistic expression. \nAltar-native immerses visitors in the multiplicities within ESEA culture and diaspora. The artists come together to magnify and challenge ideas of death and mourning\, confronting societal taboos. By expanding the notion of “ghosts”\, exploring ritual and altar practices\, the exhibition serves as a conduit for the reexamination of ancestral\, and therefore personal\, identities. The exhibition also explores themes of loss and immortality\, transcending human-spirit boundaries and conventional understandings of grief. \nLaunching on Halloween\, guests attending the opening night are encouraged to draw on ghosts and ancestral heritage as inspiration for their costumes/outfits. \nCurators:\nDora Lam\nDuong Thuy Nguyen \nFeatured Artists: \nAlison Lam @alisonlam_art\nBettina Fung | 馮允珊 @bettinafws\nDora Lam @dorathedrawer\nDuong Thuy Nguyen @duonguyen.thuy\nMegumi Ohata @megumiohata\nKV Duong @kvduongart\nSammi Mak @mak.sammi\nYang-En Hume @yangenhume\nYu Leng @buleng000 \nAbout the artists \nAlison Lam \nAlison Lam identifies as a neurodivergent\, interdisciplinary\, socially engaged British-Chinese educator\, activist\, a mother\, as an artist using differing materials such as porcelain\, metals\, glass and paper. Alison’s work explores through her cultural heritage difference\, isolation\, belonging and inclusion and her practice facilitates conversations for people who sometimes find it hard to communicate. Stemming from her own personal experiences with her two sons\, who are autistic with complex needs\, Alison uses art and activism to bridge these gaps and create a space that’s supportive and accessible. \nBettina Fung \nBettina Fung | 馮允珊 is a Hong Kong born\, British-Chinese artist based in the UK. Her practice centres around the performative nature of drawing\, and bringing people together to explore participative means of sharing the creative making process. She creates 2D\, site-specific and performative works that explore and question subjects of legacy\, belonging\, futility\, productivity and progress. With a strong interest in the ideas of ‘commoning’ and ‘creative collective actions’\, her recent works are associated with the themes of shared authorship and the dynamics within working and building together and often involve audience interactions. \nDora Lam \nDora Lam is an interdisciplinary artist navigating notions of identity\, diaspora\, transnationalism and heritage. Her socially-engaged work deals with cultural complexity and displacement on personal and collective levels. She is especially interested in how collaborative art practices can mine\, construct\, preserve and engage with the more nuanced forms of cultural and familial heritage. She is concerned with challenging the “invisibility” of the (mis/under)represented ESEA diaspora and places community at the forefront of her practice. \nDuong Thuy Nguyen \nDuong Thuy Nguyen is a Vietnamese multidisciplinary artist\, and writer based in London and Hanoi\, who explores the questions of origin\, memory\, and belonging in relation to place and landscape. Using habitats as the basis\, Duong experimental works concurrently allude to the historic circulation of products and people\, to cycles of life\, death and rebirth\, as well as notions of individual history\, intergenerational exchange and inherited trauma. Graduating from Central Saint Martins with a distinction\, Duong’s Master Fine Art project was awarded as a winner of Maison/0 This Earth Award and the mentioned Cass Art prize in 2023. \nMegumi Ohata \nMegumi Ohata is a London-based interdisciplinary artist and SFX MUA of primarily Japanese heritage with a mixed Korean background. Their practice explores gender\, identity\, and Posthuman philosophy\, addressing personal traumas – from the impacts of child abuse to the discrimination they have faced due to their Asian heritage. Ohata perceives their art as an extension of their own body\, blurring boundaries beyond their skin\, seeking the non-human form within. They challenge the role of artists in breaking free from society’s negative cycles and pose the question: What does a body need to be relatable? \nKV Duong \nKV Duong (b.1980 Ho Chi Minh\, Vietnam) is a London-based artist who examines the complexities of the Vietnamese queer identity through painting\, performance\, sculpture\, and installation. Duong grew up in Canada to Chinese Vietnamese parents displaced by the Vietnam War. In his work he explores themes of migration and cultural assimilation through the lens of his personal and familial history. Duong presented his first institutional solo exhibition at the Migration Museum in 2022. In Spring 2022\, he co-curated and led a collaborative exhibition titled “No Place Like Home” at Museum of The Home. \nSammi Mak \nSammi Mak is a female artist born in Hong Kong and currently based in London. Her works explore how painterliness depicts personal experience and identity in reality\, acting as a form of language. She delves into the realm of poetry by replacing linguistics with painted lexicology. Her works bring together the psychological stages and spiritual connections of human beings and the universe\, conveying a sense of oneness and ecstasy through paint and writing. \nYang-En Hume \nYang-En Hume is an Australian-Singaporean artist working with installation\, textiles\, and alternative photographic processes. Her work explores memory\, untold stories\, and cultural identity. Hume’s work explores the Asian-Australian experience\, reflecting particularly on the permeable categories of ‘Asia’ and the ‘West’. She is interested in how family photography is used as a social practice that both reflects and shapes relationships and cultural practices. \nYu Leng \nYu Leng is from Jinan\, China and has been living in the UK since 2015. She graduated from CSM with an MA in Contemporary Photography; Practice and Philosophy in 2021. Her work involves photography\, moving images and performance. Usually intrigued by the physical space\, landscape\, notion of power and time discursively. Her work centres around the reconstruction and deconstruction of the narratives surrounding her daily life. She was interested in adopting a phenomenological way of documentation\, portraying obscure figures while realising the impossibility of escaping the cultural notion that was embedded in her. She enjoys playing with different digital tools and also practising techniques with analogue cameras. \nCommunity Drumming CIC – Drumming Circle (collaborative performance) \nEdgar Deu and Gary Lee are percussion teachers and band leaders with more than 15 years of experience playing afro-brazilian music. They recently founded Community Drumming CIC\, a non-profit organisation that provides low cost drumming workshops to underrepresented\, underprivileged and marginalised groups with the goal of building inclusive\, collaborative and resilient communities that fosters human interactions\, empowers people\, develops their artistic creativity\, and improves their mental well-being.

SUMMARY:The Brink
DESCRIPTION:The BrinK\nNew ruins have not yet acquired the weathered patina of age…’ Rose Macaulay\, Pleasure of Ruins\, 1953\n\nThe Brink is an expansive exhibition of 21 artists\, both established and early-career\, whose works range sculpture\, installation\, painting\, and performance\, all set within the space of a formerly dilapidated tannery. The exhibition\, a collaborative initiative with artists Anna Blom\, Jo Dennis and curators Marjorier Ding\, Elena Shkvarkina and Linlin Zhu\, brings together artists from different disciplines\, creating work that explores the psychological\, physical\, and imagined dimensions of a space.\n\n\n\n\nUsing a stripped back site as a way to explore the idea of place and conversely\, non-place. Sites like this are often liminal spaces\, which means that they are in-between places. They are not fully public or fully private\, not fully built or fully natural. This liminality creates a sense of disorientation and alienation\, which is used as a point of departure for exploring the complex and often contradictory ways in which we experience space\, and to consider the ways in which place can be shaped by our personal and collective memories and culture. The works will navigate themes of temporality\, mortality\, and the relationship between the individuals and the spaces they inhabit\, as well as the ways in which place can be shaped by memory\, history\, and mythology.\n\nWith artworks tailored for the exhibition\, The Brink encompasses both the ground floor and garage of the Ugly Duck exhibition space\, featuring: Abigail Norris\, Alex Young\, Anna Blom\, Elena Shkvarkina\, Ge Hui\, Ivan Seal\, Jo Dennis\, Katrin Spranger\, Nicola Hicks MBE\, Pía Ortuño\, Ross Taylor\, Tom Woolner\, Xu Haoyang\, Zhang Guangyu\, ZITA.\n\n\n\nSpecial guest KV Duong will perform Katrin Spranger’s 1.8\, an evocative environmental statement\, in collaboration with costume designer ZITA. In addition to the exhibition\, the special screening program led by Linlin Zhu will showcase a range of mid and short films\, including documentary films directed by Pietro Francesco Pingitore and Siyi Gu\, experimental shorts created by Laura Puig and Chengzhou\, and an animation by Elmano Diogo. These films delve into themes of healing through art\, spiritual exchange with nature\, and the potential for resurrection amidst ruins. The documentaries spotlight animal life trapped within artificial ecosystems. Experimental shorts incorporate the human psyche into wildlife medium of trees and goldfish\, while the animation guides the audience towards healing psychological trauma.

SUMMARY:Do You Buy This
DESCRIPTION:Do You Buy This\n\n\nDo You Buy This? showcases commodified feminist objects\, considering the duality between critiquing corporate cooption and supporting feminist practice. We look forward to welcoming audiences to explore the complexities of operating in a capitalist system\, exercising our spending power in feminist ways. \nWe are exhibiting commodities that have been produced in corporate environments\, alongside works created by independent artists. All works have been sold or are intended for sale and all explore feminism\, especially the intersectional focus of its fourth wave. \nStudents of the History of Design MA Programme at the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal College of Art (Amber Kim\, Cas Bradbeer\, Sufiyeh Hadian and Zarna Hart) have curated this showcase\, selecting a broad range of commodified fourth-wave feminist objects made from 2012 to the present day. \n“Our aim as curators is to explore financially supporting feminist practice while remaining critical of the capitalist commodification of feminism. We invite our visitors to engage with this discourse” \nZarna Hart\, Cas Bradbeer\, Sufiyeh Hadian and Amber Kim \n \nHoused at Ugly Duck\, on the ground floor of their Victorian warehouse\, the exhibition will further their commitment to support under-represented voices and emerging artists. \n– 3rd August\, 6-9pm – Private View \n– 4th August\, 12-8pm – Open\, including a Curators’ Tour \n– 5th August\, 12-8pm – Open\, including a zine workshop with Holly Casio \n– 6th August\, 12-6pm – Open\, including a tile painting workshop with Rebecca Wise \n \nVisit www.doyoubuythis.com for more information\, or contact doyoubuythis@gmail.com \nThis exhibition has been developed with the support of Ugly Duck. It is funded by the History of Design MA’s Student-Led Project Fund\, in addition to the Design History Society’s Research Exhibition Grant.

DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to invite you to the sharing of a month-long residency on Thursday 27th July featuring 16 artists from Africa\, Asia and Europe! \nLost & Found is an artist-led hybrid residency & research programme\, investigating new ways of collaborating virtually\, and engaging audiences across geographical boundaries. This year artists have been exploring ‘The Long Way Home’ under the guidance of a powerful artist director trio from Botswana\, Uganda and India: Kat Kai Kol-Kes\, Pamela Aobo Enyonu and Diya Naidu. \nOn the evening of Thursday 27th July – starting at 5pm GMT – you are invited to immerse yourself in performances\, installations with visual\, sound and wordart as well as other surprises \nBotswana/Chile/Germany/India/Iran/Kenya/Nigeria/Rwanda/South Sudan/Switzerland/Uganda/UK \nEast African Soul Train (EAST) brings artists from across disciplines & geographies together on a journey to experiment artistically\, critically exploring our entangled histories & futures. Rendered impossible during the pandemic\, EAST has grown to include Lost+Found\, a hybrid artist-led residency and research programme exploring how we can connect and collaborate virtually\, in meaningful ways that push our artistic practice. The increased use of virtual platforms has opened up opportunities for expanding networks and working with new people\, but some of the powerful\, affective and generative qualities of physical experiences have been lost in this translation. \nLost+Found uses technology and gamified approaches to catalyse connection\, collaboration and cutting-edge work across geographies and disciplines (https://www.eastsoultrain.global/lostfound). Throughout the six-week programme\, 16 artists from across Africa/India/Europe\, will be guided through an online/offline process that inspires them to play\, share perspectives with their peers\, take risks and create new collaborative work. In this programme we work with local partners around the world\, use low-tech hacks and repurpose smartphone technologies (Zoom/WhatsApp/GPS/QR). The project will culminate in a series of on/offline performances/installations in India\, Kenya\, the UK and via Zoom for global audiences starting week commencing 24th July 2023. Following the residency we will produce an NFT collection and works will also be available virtually and as an ‘exhibition in a box’\, which artists from the wider EAST collective can also use to create pop-up events in their own localities. Artists also actively participate in an ongoing research programme\, generating new questions\, insights and perspectives around the complex North/South power dynamics present in creative exchange opportunities and the care needed to address them. This will lead to a webinar and collaborative research paper later in 2023. \n \nCo-Artistic Directors (Alphabetic Order): \nDiya Naidu: Dancer and Choreographer (India) @diyanise \nKat Kai Kol-Kes: Interdisciplinary Artist (Botswana) @katkkolkes \nPamela Enyonu: Visual Artist (Uganda) @syokereart \nFurther Details on 2023 Collaborating Artists (Alphabetic Order): \nAde (Mandela Matur): Poet\, Author\, spoken word artist\, lyricist and expressive arts therapist \n(South Sudan) \nArya Rothe: Documentary filmmaker (India) \nAldir Polymeris: Video artist\, performer\, theater maker and an art mediator (Switzerland/Chile) \nChuma Anagbado: Artist\, Designer\, Entrepreneur (Nigeria/Kenya) \nGisou Golshani: Multidisciplinary artist (Iran/UK) \nIngabire Gretta: Poet\, Actress\, Painter (Rwanda) \nJoy Yaa Kincaid: Multidisciplinary artist (UK) \nJustine Wanda: Stand-up comedian\, writer\, and satirist (Kenya) \nMali Bora: Music Composer and Animator (Kenya) \nMeloe Gennai: Poet and a pluridisciplinary artist (Switzerland) \nMmakgosi Kgabi: Writer. SUMMARY:It’s Always Ourselves We Find In The Sea
DESCRIPTION:From the 19 to the 23th Ugly Duck welcome two projects in their victorian factory\, Dolls by John Lee Bird and It’s Always Ourselves We Find In The Sea by Illustrious Company. \nMore info below \nIt’s Always Ourselves We Find In The Sea \nCreated by world-renowned musician and music producer Martyn Ware\, composer Gabriel Ware\, and immersive storytellers Oscar Blustin and Anna Söderblom\, It’s Always Ourselves We Find In The Sea is a captivating and thought-provoking sound and art installation\, an exploration of the waters of the earth and how the power of water binds all of humanity together. \nMartyn Ware says\, “We invite visitors to step away from the busy streets of London and enjoy a moment of contemplation and reflection in an oasis of calm. The climate crisis is one of the biggest threats to our planet right now\, and thinking about it can create fear and anxiety that leads to paralysis; we designed ‘It’s Always Ourselves’ to remind each other that as well as a potential source of danger\, water is essential to life on earth\, infinitely precious to every living creature today and to every human culture that has ever existed. The installation asks us to look beyond our framings of division to understand that it is only by viewing ourselves as part of a planet-wide ecosystem\, culturally as well as geographically\, can we begin to act as responsible stewards of our world. Our shared collective mythology of water should propel us towards a shared collective response in the face of the rising seas.” \nThe installation’s immersive soundscape has been created using Ware’s Illustrious Company specialist ambisonic technology. He founded the company together with Vince Clarke in 2000\, to develop new forms of spatialised sound composition using three dimensional surround sound \nsystems. ‘It’s Always Ourselves’ is the latest in a line of over seventy international projects that Illustrious has created. \nwww.alwaysourselves.com \n \nBACKGROUND \nMartyn Ware met Blustin and Söderblom in Venice\, in the aftermath of the record-breaking November 2019 flooding that devastated parts of the city. “Venetians have dealt with acqua alta flooding for thousands of years\, it has always been a part of life in the lagoon\,” says Blustin\, “But there is a noticeable\, inarguable increase in the frequency of these events.” Since 1872\, when records began\, Venice’s seasonal flooding has exceeded 140cm 25 times – and two thirds of these instances have occurred in the last 20 years. \n“In moments like these\, you see a city or a community pull together. Students came out in huge numbers and formed human chains to pass books out of flooded libraries to higher ground\, anyone with functioning electricity offered phone charging for those without\, cafes and bars handed out coffee to everyone wading by – it was incredibly moving to see how much this city means to people\, and how quickly and whole-heartedly a community can collectively respond to a crisis.” \n“We met in an old tobacco warehouse on the Grand Canal\, the Fondaco Marcello\,” says Ware. “The walls were still drying and you could see the damage the flooding had caused. We wanted to create an experience exploring our relationship with water – that it’s both essential to all life on Earth\, but increasingly a threat to so many peoples and places.” \nSöderblom says\, “The coverage of the flooding in Venice focused on the disaster\, the damage and the inevitable cost of repairs. But our experience of living through it was more nuanced – the collective resolve of Venetians in the face of this situation was inspirational\, even hopeful. We were keen to avoid the panic often associated with the climate crisis and instead create\, with this installation\, a contemplative space for visitors to consider their relationship with water.” \n \nTHE TECHNOLOGY \nWare’s company Illustrious specialises in three-dimensional\, spatialised sound installations. Ware uses design techniques and software honed over decades to uncanny effect. “What we do goes beyond surround sound\,” says Ware\, “Using 3D sound software (based on a technique called Ambisonics)\, micro-second delays and phase shifts enable us to trick the ear into believing sounds are invisibly located in three-dimensional space. Usually\, when you listen to music or watch a film\, you’re aware of the direction the sound is coming from – the technology we use creates a ‘sound field’ which truly immerses the listener. Even after 20 years I still find it astonishing and quite moving to experience.” \nGabriel Ware says\, “The soundscape features water rituals from around the world – the technology allows us to feel as though we’re experiencing these rituals live – as if they’re happening all around us. Three dimensional sound removes some of the barriers of traditional audio setups to offer incredibly vivid experiences.” \n \nFURTHER INFORMATION \nMartyn Ware \nMARTYN WARE is a musician\, producer\, designer and innovator\, born in 1956 in Sheffield\, UK. He formed The Human League in 1978\, British Electric Foundation in 1980\, and Heaven 17 the same year. With these and others\, Martyn has featured on recordings totaling over 50 million sales worldwide\, establishing himself as a pivotal figure in the development of popular music. Amongst others\, he has produced Tina Turner\, Terence Trent D’Arby\, Chaka Khan\, Erasure\, Marc Almond and Mavis Staples. \nIn 2000\, he founded Illustrious Company with Vince Clarke (Erasure\, Depeche Mode) to explore the creative and commercial possibilities of their unique three-dimensional sound technology. With Illustrious\, Martyn has created immersive sound experiences for clients including the British Council\, The Science Museum\, The Royal Ballet\, Amnesty International\, the V&A Museum\, Mute Records\, BBC TV\, the Royal Observatory Greenwich\, BAFTA\, Museum Of London\, and Tate Britain. He created sonic architectural works in the British Pavilion at the Venice Architectural Biennale in 2006\, and has designed sound installations in extraordinary\, diverse settings across five continents. \nMartyn is a Visiting Professor at C4DM at Queen Mary College\, University of London\, a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art and the Harvard Graduate School of Design\, a patron of Arts & Business\, a member of the LA-based international think-tank group Matter\, a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts\, a member of the Writers Guild of America and a founder member of 5D (a US based organisation promoting all aspects of immersive design). He also lectures extensively on music production\, technology and creativity at universities and colleges across the world including the Red Bull Music Academy. \n \nIllustrious Company \nILLUSTRIOUS COMPANY was formed by Martyn Ware and Vince Clarke in 2000 to create new forms of spatialised sound composition using three dimensional surround-sound systems. Illustrious also offers consultancy in cutting-edge sonic research and solutions. \nIllustriouscompany.co.uk \n \nGabriel Ware \nGABRIEL WARE is a modern hybrid orchestral composer for soundscapes\, film and drama. \nHaving begun his composition journey in 2015 without a formal music education\, Gabriel quickly developed his style and advanced his production techniques\, relying entirely on his pure passion for film and television music. Since then\, Gabriel has worked on many major soundscape and media projects\, lending his advanced understanding of emotion\, texture\, and experimental style\, to much acclaim. \nwww.gabrielware.com \n \nOscar Blustin \nOSCAR BLUSTIN is a writer\, director and producer specialising in live immersive entertainment. In the UK\, he has created pioneering immersive and interactive adventures for clients including the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Durham\, The National Maritime Museum\, and the London Transport Museum\, as well as landmarks including Tower Bridge\, The Actors’ Church in Covent Garden\, and Wilton’s Music Hall. In 2011\, he founded SPECIFIQ\, an experiential site-specific theatre company that has produced work at venues from the National Theatre to the Vaults beneath Waterloo Station\, from high-rise office blocks and castles to libraries\, churches\, disused shopfronts\, forests and stately homes. \nHe has lectured at universities\, drama schools and conferences on both sides of the Atlantic\, and was awarded a Visiting Fellowship at Keene State University\, New Hampshire. \nwww.oscarblustin.com \n \nAnna Söderblom \nANNA SÖDERBLOM’s background is a hybrid of arts\, media and technology – finding new and interesting ways to tell stories. \nIn 2009\, she founded a company to develop immersive theatre techniques and cross-platform storytelling\, exploring ways to create and manage this (then new) kind of entertainment. Ten years of artistic and logistical evolution has culminated in Storia\, an organisation committed to world-class immersive entertainment\, ethical cultural tourism\, and accessible\, experiential history. Storia’s inaugural production\, a vast trans-media immersive historical extravaganza\, will open in Venice\, Italy\, in summer 2023. \nAnna has worked as a journalist\, columnist and sub-editor for The Times\, and as a reporter for the Guardian. She began working on the internet in 1997\, developing content and products across a wide range of online platforms. SUMMARY:DOLLS by John Lee Bird
DESCRIPTION:Dolls by John Lee Bird\n‘Dolls and idols – a way of existence’ \n\n\nArtist John Lee Bird will be presenting a major solo exhibition\, bringing his new DOLLS project alongside work spanning his 25 year career including large scale paintings\, print\, drawing and film. With influences stemming from film\, cult TV\, performance\, drag and music\, the exhibition will be a celebration of culture\, London\, and the LGBTQ+ community.\n\nJohn says of his work: “The DOLLS project began at the beginning of lockdown with a crippling spinal condition. I felt the urge to return to working with fabric and textiles\, the way I'd begun my art degree in 1997. I found a box of felt in my studio and decided on a whim to make a David Bowie doll… just over 3 months later I’d made 69 Bowie dolls; one to mark each year that "The Man Who Fell To Earth" graced us with his existence. Covering every stage of his career. Celebrating the life of my idol and all the costume collaborators that brought his creativity to our eyes\, an obsessive tribute. My library of Bowie's music as the soundtrack to my endless stitching.\nThe project spiralled\, I wanted to make more\, looking at my vast music collection I decided to dive in and bring everyone to life in felt form. Immersing myself in their sounds as I stitched. Making one a day became an obsession and driving force…and my daily\nentertainment. Then it continued\, I started to look at my favourite films and tv moments\, ALIEN\, The Exorcist\, Twin Peaks\, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and many more. Finally deciding to stop stitching after 3 whole years in March 2023…nearly 800 dolls later.\n\nWorking with textiles gave me a comfortable way to work and an exciting challenge to attempt portraiture of a different kind: over the years I have worked on portraits through various mediums\, including a ten-year project documenting performers in large-scale paintings\, collage work and drawings; but I’ve never explored portraiture in textile work\, until\nnow.\n\nEach doll is 13 inches tall. Lovingly hand-sewn from felt…with beads\, buttons\, wool and occasionally extra fabrics and embellishments. Combining my love of music\, films and fabric gave me a sense of purpose and freedom to play and helped me through the darkest moments.” … Throughout the exhibition run\, there will be evening performances: showcasing some of the\nacts included as dolls. Including live bands\, spoken word and some special cabaret slots by performers from Cabaret vs Cancer who John will be raising funds for.\n\nOn the opening night\, visitors can purchase from a range merchandise to support the exhibition and there will be the launch of the special exhibition edition of the David Bowie Is A Doll book. There will be daily screenings of DOLL FILMS\, artist talks (led by guest ‘DOLL’ tour guides) and weekend workshops.\n\nEXHIBITION DETAILS:\nJOHN LEE BIRD\nDOLLS (and other works)\nAt UGLY DUCK\, 49 Tanner St\, London SE1 3PL\n19 th -23 rd JULY 2023. SUMMARY:RƎWIRE by BJ MCNEILL
DESCRIPTION:RƎWIRE is a live work that started with dance and looks at the cross sections of disidentification through interdisciplinary theatrical practice and a queer lens. \nUsing a rhizomatic approach RƎWIRE explores traditionalisms\, while perforating and reframing them by placing them in conversation with something new\, different or other. \nDrawing from Hip Hop and alternative sonic landscapes RƎWIRE explores sampling – sonically and performatively\, and looks at hip hop and queerness through rap\, movement and object play and repurposing. \nRƎWIRE explores resistance and masculinity and the body as a site of labour alongside public & private space & sex. \nContent Warning: This show deals with aspects of homophobia with language that may be upsetting to some audiences\, the show has themes of sex\, blood and violence and references drug use. \n \nAudience note: This is a standing performance. DESCRIPTION:Camp Trans presents: \nINTRA (depend on me bby) is an exhibition and weekend events programme showcasing the work of trans artists who explore the central theme of intradependence. Intradependence is a tactic of love\, existence\, resistance and survival – it is an anarchic reliance on one other and our community\, but also the sites we inhabit\, the spaces we build for each and the natural land we commune with. \nINTRA (depend on me bby) is a slice of what to expect at this year’s Camp Trans programme\, which daydreams about the magical summer nights of our festival to come\, a time when we hope to heal with one another by being together in nature. Tickets sales will be used to raise money for concession tickets. SOAK IT UP Xx \nThe two-day event will host visual art installations\, poetry readings\, live-art performances\, trans-led life drawing\, a panel with trans activists\, anarchist clothes and books swaps and a vegan BBQ. \nPart of the exhibition shows archival material of the original Camp Trans protests from 1992- onwards\, and audio recordings of interviews with the original attendees and organisers. Ugly Duck is run by queer and queer “friendly” staff. They all have basic training in inclusivity and accessibility. \nProfit\nThe profit we make from the exhibition will go to offer concession tickets for those who would not otherwise be able to attend due to financial barriers. \nCredits\nCo-Curated by Elliot Lind and Biogal \nReading Curation by TISSUE \nExhibition Design by Martha Summers \nSet Assistant: Lee Bowler \nPoster Design by Saati Conran-McCormack \nSafety: Safe Only Ltd \nCamp Trans\nCamp Trans is a UK-based grassroots art and community festival created entirely by and for trans folk. Inspired by archival documentation of the original Camp Trans – an annual protest camp organised by Riki Wilchins and Leslie Feinberg outside the trans-exclusionary Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival – our camping festival is devoted to platforming trans artistry through an anarchist DIY approach to programming and funding. Hosted in a queer-owned field in Leighton Buzzard\, with access to hillsides\, forest and a swimming lake – Camp Trans firmly believes in the liberating power and joy that grows from communing in nature as a radical t4t collective. \nThe festival will consist of poetry readings\, art performances\, workshops\, foraging\, bonfires\, slime wrestling\, karaoke and swimming in a lake. The festival is run and staffed by trans people. Camp Trans is a community grassroots project\, to exchange skills and crafts\, knowledge and info. A space to facilitate and show work by trans artists. We want to create somewhere where there is time to process and try out new ideas. \nThis year\, we have invited Joni McLaughlin AKA Biogal to guest curate the artists. We plan to have a guest curator each year from now on. \nTISSUE\nTISSUE is a reading night dedicated to showcasing both established and emerging trans* and non-binary writers. It foregrounds literary work being produced by trans writers and artists\, seeking to explore and understand what it means to be trans in a way that moves beyond the strict expectations of memoir\, identity politics\, and trauma porn. \n\nLondon EventsUgly DuckMusicArtPerformanceShowcaseCommunityPoetryDiscussionWrestlingFilm\n\n\n\nThe Lineup\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril Lin 林森 / Biogal / Elliot Lind / Gabriel Kidd / Jesse Glazzard / Jordan/Martin Hell / Joseph Vince Thomas / Josiah Moktar / Kane Stonestreet & Lori Lo Bianco / Katayoun Jalilipour / Kiara Mohamed Amin / Lou Lou Sainsbury / Magda Onatra / Marlo D Mortimer / Maria Mautino / Mariette Pathy Allen / Mort Drew / Morgan Page / Mother Mandragora\, Salacious in Purple of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence / Puer Deorum / Riki Wilchins / Rosa Marouane / Streams (Matisse Pagès\, Nat Li Lin Steinhouse & Yuki Nakayama) / Susy Langsdale / SweatMother / TISSUE

SUMMARY:A Brief Pause
DESCRIPTION:A Brief Pause\nItch The Scratch collective and current Central second-year BA Performance Arts students invite you to join us as we soften the boundaries\, doors and walls. \nbetween you and me \nbetween us and them \nbetween these and those \nbetween some and others \nA Brief Pause is a day-long festival\, celebrating joy and togetherness. Through performances\, music and workshops we will create an entangled space. A shared response-ability that will help us alter (and inspire) each other as hosts and guests. \nSo\, the offering of a cushion\, a poem\, or the touch of a blanket will carefully unravel an ongoing dialogue of change and mutual adaptation. \nLet’s rehearse radical hospitality in our hub\, designed to stimulate the seeding of connections\, companionship and kinship. Or share solace\, joy and pleasure as one multifaceted being through workshops that help us embody ourselves/our-selves/our selves. SUMMARY:PONYBOY by Eliot Duncan – book launch
DESCRIPTION:PONYBOY by Eliot Duncan – book launch\n⛓️⛓️ Join Footnote Press and Ugly Duck on the 1st of June for a night of ‘melancholic transboy swagger’ to celebrate the launch of Eliot Duncan’s ‘astonishing’ debut novel ponyboy\, a week ahead of its release ⛓️⛓️ \nA bildungsroman set over three acts\, Ponyboy is a quest for self-identity set among the art world of Paris and Berlin. In the first act\, Ponyboy’s eponymous narrator-a pill-popping\, speed-snorting trans-masculine lightning bolt-unravels in his Paris apartment. Ponyboy is caught in a messy love triangle with Baby\, a lesbian painter who can’t see herself being with someone trans\, and Toni\, a childhood friend who can actually see Ponyboy for who he is. Strung out\, Ponyboy follows Baby to Berlin in act two\, where he sinks deeper into drugs and falls for a fellow writer\, all the while pursued by a megalomaniacal photographer hungry for the next hot thing. \nAs Ponyboy’s relationships crumble\, he overdoses and finds himself alone in his childhood home in Iowa. The novel’s final act follows Ponyboy to rehab\, exploring the ways in which trans identity\, addiction and recovery can reforge the bond between mother and child. \n \nEliot Duncan is a writer and artist living in London. He is the co-creator of the international\, queer collective Slanted House. He studied philosophy at the American University of Paris and is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. \nLine-up \nReadings from: \nKole Fulmine \nKatayoun Jalilipour \nEliot Duncan \nQ&A with D Mortimer \nOriginal film by Sweatmother \nBooks will be available to purchase on the night or you can pre-order a copy with your ticket.

SUMMARY:Lunarrr Playgroundz
DESCRIPTION:Lunarrr Playgroundz\nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:\nLunarrr Playgroundz is an experimental open coven that tries to offer safe(r) spaces of spiritual inquiry\, transformation and healing for the queer community and its wonderful allies.\n\nThe project unfolds through ritual-workshops in accordance with the phases of the moon. It is held by the main facilitator b y u k a (they/ them)\, as well as by invited guest queer magic practitioners. Some of the themes we explore are:\n\nWays of queering and embodying the tarot\nElemental magic\nQueer ancestor altars\nRebirth rituals\nShapeshifting techniques &\nHow to create relationships to non-human familiars\nFrameworks for moon worship\nWays of befriending grief\nBlood magic\nAstrology\nTranspersonal Psychology\nChaos Magick\nAlchemy\n\nThe project unfolds through the lens of moon magic- an ancestral and animist ritual technology. This framework can help us reclaim our embodied cyclical rhythm of living\, and guide us into how to honour both our phases of growth and celebration\, as well as our grief\, rest and reflection. Like the moon\, we wax and wane.\n\nInstead of the linear\, productivity-driven timelines of patriarchal capitalism\, we devote ourselves to the creative flow woven by the magnificent planetary dance between the moon and the earth – which directs the seasonal changes\, the movement of tides and our planet’s axis. As we are mammals who are birthed\, fed and held between the cosmic and the earthly landscapes – we are made and unmade by these rhythms. Like the moon\, we wax and wane.\n\nEmpowering our lunar bodies can help us rebel against the industrial\, machine-like clock that dominates our lives and our relationship to the ecosystems. Our lunar bodies can dream into being futurities that bloom with collective care\, care that heals us from the violent spells of hierarchy\, binaries and normativity. Futurities that are guided by myths & stories full of playfulness\, solidarity\, rest. Full of camp hybrids\, sacred disruptors\, wise fools. Full of recycled altars\, ceremonial raves and sensuous technologies.\n\nThe project also asks the question- what is queer magic?\n\nLunarrr Playgroundz – both as a magical praxis & as an embodied mythology that is being collectively written- is inherently queer. Strange\, fluid\, playful. The moon is a shapeshifter.\n\nThe moon transitions all the time- from one phase to the other\, showing us its many faces\, energies and qualities via an intricate dance of reflected sunlight\, darkness\, vulnerability and power. It’s a performative ceremony of many genders\, many kinds of prayers\, many pains and many sensualities – gifted to an entire galaxy.\n\nLunar magic framework\n( to be taken as a poetic invitation and not as a recipe! 🙂\n\nWaning Moon\nAs our lunar satellite veils itself into cosy shadows- darkness slowly becomes an intimate cocoon of focus\, reassessment and rest. For half of the cycle- we can witness the tender beauty of the moon’s disappearance. Each night they sacrifice more and more of their shining skins\, teaching us about the sacred necessity of retrieval.\n\nWhat is no longer serving our needs? What layers of being are shedding and need ceremonial acknowledgement? How can we make friends with our shadows? With the sides of ourselves that we have outcasted? That we are terrified or ashamed of? Our exhaustion\, our anger\, our strangeness?\n\nThe waning moon invites us to connect deeper to our grief – so that we know more clearly what we need to let go of in order to respect our own becoming.\n\nWe acknowledge that the seeds of renewal are buried in the universe’s magical acts of disappearance. Of loss. Of letting go. Of sacrifice. Our futurities lay in the soil’s dark womb\, as we learn how to surrender in the dance of death and rebirth- breathing in and breathing out. As we give birth to ourselves into new shapes of joy\, we leave parts of us as offerings to the land\, to rot and home themselves into the mycelial networks. The past versions of ourselves become compost for our new desires and dreams to flourish.\n\nNew Moon\nThe sun and the moon are completely aligned. There is no light emanating towards us. The world is at a stillpoint. We hide\, cocoon ourselves like a dark moon\, we root ourselves into the unseen\, back to the forces of creative mystery that weave our livelihoods together. Back into the nest of dreams our queer and blood ancestors built. We pause with them so that their blessings and pains can inform our future journeys. Through this darkness we remember the wombic warmth from which life is born\, the darkness of deep soil as it homes a seed\, the point 0 from which all beginnings take place. Through this process we become intimate with our desires and offer them space\, as we water them with our powers and plan for the next lunar cycle.\n\nWaxing Moon\nLike the moon\, we shapeshift\, transition and baptise new desires and needs into expression.\nAs the light of the moon starts growing\, we reflect on our own relationship to growth and empowerment: the fears\, excitement\, hardship and tenderness that show up in the process. The waxing moon invites us to follow the momentum\, recalibrate\, expand. How does it feel to take space? To gather? To build? What is our support system while we do so? What offerings of time\, space\, kindness and patience does this birth need?\nWhat is commitment? What is devotion?\n\nFull Moon\nReaching the full moon – it’s high time we celebrate and bathe in the acceptance and gratitude of what we birthed into expression until now. We can bring offerings to our allies who supported our journeys – humans\, plants\, land\, planets and spirits.\nWho is your family? By blood\, by choice\, by devotion? How does your thank you look like? How much of you and your time you pour into learning how to celebrate them and the life around you?\nThe full moon also allows us to sense where we are in our relationship to power and expression: are we fully allowing ourselves to shine? To be seen? To manifest? With ourselves in our full splendour? With our delicious mistakes\, with our awkward joy\, with our ecstasy? Our needs and longings? The full moon is also a time for fun. Pleasure for pleasure’s sake. Ritual raves\, healing spells\nof laughter and uncensored howls.\n\nFor who\nLunarrr Playgroundz is a container of queer magic for the queer community and its allies.\nAll workshops will play with movement\, breathwork\, voice and writing in different measures\, depending on the theme and facilitator- but you will always be in charge of how you wish to interact with our suggestions and guidance\, as well as the intensity and rhythm which feels pleasureful and needed to you on the day.\nThere are no prerequisites for the rituals. Any levels of movement or magical practice are\nwelcomed: from curious creatures to baby witches & to geeky magicians who speak crow language! (if you do\, please message for a skill swap 🙂\n\nUnfortunately the space is not accessible by wheelchair.\nFor any questions feel free to email: @byuka.krow@gmail.com

SUMMARY:@DISTURBANCE
DESCRIPTION:watch the replay \n \nUgly Duck Bermondsey is excited to announce the return of @Disturbance this November. A flagship programme championing LGBTQIA+ performance\, video and digital artists\, @Disturbance hosts a week-long residency culminating in two nights of public performances on November 10 & 12. A simultaneous high-quality livestream enables those outside London and unable to travel to experience @Disturbance in full effect. It is key for Ugly Duck to encourage accessibility and support radical\, diverse\, queer artists. @Disturbance is set to be as brave and breathtaking as previous programmes\, all of which have sold out and featured artists from all over the world. \nCreative Director of Ugly Duck and founder of @Disturbance Deen Atger says: “At @Disturbance we find and nurture the talents of tomorrow. Bold and forward-thinking artists deconstructing boundaries and paving the way for totally new aesthetics. Each year @Disturbance gets bigger and we’re excited to welcome new artists into our growing network”. \nUgly Duck is currently celebrating a decade of revitalising underused buildings and supporting marginalised artists. Established in October 2012\, the organisation has transformed a spacious\, empty Victorian warehouse in SE1 into a thriving\, creative hub. Over 1500 significant artists and arts collectives have collaborated with Ugly Duck over the past 10 years. \nAbout @Disturbance 2022 artists: \nGisou Golshani is a London-based Iranian artist. Their work depicts abstract narratives from seemingly disparate elements. Through multilayered editing and playful uses of sampling\, they investigate the intimacy of the voice\, the effects of sound on the body and their mother tongue Farsi’s complexities in translation. Looking into archival found material\, Gisou will create a multi-sensory\, immersive installation and performance at @Disturbance. Previous work has been shown at Nottingham’s New Art Exchange\, Mimosa House\, London and internationally including their home country. \nJoy Yaa Kincaid is a London-based multidisciplinary artist. Intersectionality is a focus of their work which at @Disturbance will encompass both performance and video art. Centered on presenting worldly and political truths of contradiction\, randomness and beautiful messiness\, they view themselves as a mirror reflecting multiplicities of gender and culture in addition to the many absurdities of whiteness. Joy is an exciting new talent who @Disturbance hope will soon be on the cultural radar of both arts organisations and audiences. \nRiver Cao is a moving image and performance artist originally from China now London based. Their intriguing work is created from the act of mourning\, with an emphasis on the return of the revenants. In folklore\, a revenant is an animated corpse believed to have been revived from death to haunt the living. Revisiting their marginalised queer experience of growing up in the small town landscape of southern China\, they will create a series of self-narrative spaces at @Disturbance\, to rethink the emotions of grief. River has previously presented work at the Saatchi Gallery\, ICA London\, Beijing’s Joy Museum and Cologne’s Museum Ludvic. \nKhairullah Rahim is an interdisciplinary artist based in Singapore. He works across installation\, painting\, photography and moving image. For @Disturbance\, Khairullah presents the UK debut of their short art film Buah Dahsyat (Fantastic Fruits). His research looks into strategies of resourcefulness for survival in environments under surveillance. Khairullah’s works have been shown extensively all over the world. The Barbican in London\, Millepiani in Rome and the Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York location have all played host alongside many other international arts spaces ad galleries. \nNoam Youngrak Son is a queer artist based in Ghent (Belgium). Noam presents Yummy Body Truck\, a video work about a fictional food truck selling edible human body parts. In their practice they attempt to convey stories of marginalised bodies which often include themselves into designed forms that don’t conform to the cis/heteronormative and colonial power structures. Noam has previously shown work with the Queer Institute of Ecology in Amsterdam. This November\, @Disturbance presents their work in the UK for the first time. \nOlivia Morrison is a video artist who presents new work Hug Me Properly\, in which she follows the lives of a young\, queer community on a night out. They discuss how their loved ones and lives during the pandemic have changed and how their community is more important than ever. Being a queer disabled filmmaker\, Olivia has a distinct focus on these themes. Olivia was recently on the Feature Film Jury for Iris Prize\, an international LGBTQ+ Film Festival and past work includes Cyber Sex\, a documentary giving a platform to digital sex workers. Their short film Révérence\, tackled themes such as Mental Health\, Class and LGBTQ+ rights. \nSandrine Schaefer is a video artist. Their practice is frequently presented as performance art installation work that challenges conventional viewing by using repetition\, duration and multisensory elements to enrich the curious viewer. @Disturbance will show a new performance specifically made for camera titled Simple Relations No. 4. They recently relocated from Boston\, Massachusetts to South Carolina in the United States. @Disturbance is excited to profile their first American artist who has extensively shown work in Chicago as well as throughout the United States. \nOrlando Myxx is an Italian-born London-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses photography\, film-making and performance. As a non-binary trans-masculine person\, they mainly focus on the exploration of transness as a mental\, physical and cultural experience. Myxx explores how gender non-conforming people are not only questioning the gender norms but are actively opening up awareness and opportunities gender subjectivities and for a cultural change. They will be presenting their film The Plastic Drag\, a visual and sound work that investigates how a new wave of underrepresented gender-non-conforming and diverse drag artists are redefining the art of drag and its subversive potential. \nSophie Hoyle is a video artist exploring post-colonial\, queer\, feminist\, critical psychiatry and disability. They relate personal experiences of being queer\, non-binary and part of the SWANA (South-West Asian and North African) diaspora to wider forms of structural violence. They will be showing Hyperacusis at @Disturbance: Two films about mental health\, trauma\, gender and sexuality\, access to healthcare and transcultural psychiatry. As well\, intergenerational impacts of racism\, colonialism and other socioeconomic inequalities are highlighted in Sophie’s work. Sophie has previously shown work at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art Newcastle\, London’s Science Gallery and the Arnolfini\, Bristol as well as internationally\, as far afield as Berlin\, France and Mexico. \nTalia Beale is originally from London. Their practice\, which includes film\, music and more dissects the process of society’s inner dichotomy via storytelling. This is created through the lens of a queer woman of colour navigating her twenties\, existing in spaces such as Central Saint Martins when their home is a block of flats in Tottenham. For @Disturbance Talia presents To Trudge in Zundon exploring how film making could subvert ideas about housing estates and address new voices\, specifically creative\, queer kids who live in blocks of flats. Talia has collaborated with fashion designer Charles Jeffrey\, musicians Obongjayar and Cruel Santino plus creative organisations who are platforming young artists. Talia’s music has been presented at the likes of Roundhouse\, seminal London music venue 100 Club\, Tate\, PxssyPalace and more. \nFor press inquiries\, contact Anna Goodman on 07976247026 abstrakt@abstraktpublicity.co.uk \n \n \n \n \n \nGallery Item Name\n\n \n \nGallery Item Name\nLorem ipsum dolor sit amet\, consectetur adipisicing elit. SUMMARY:Otherness Archive: Masculine Desires
DESCRIPTION:A Trans Masc Moving Image Exhibit; a wide range of work focusing on the nuances of the trans masc\nexperience.\n \nAccess: There will be a BSL interpreter for Friday and Saturday Events. The films will all be captioned in English. The space is wheelchair accessible and includes 1 disabled toilet. Seating includes plastic pop out chairs with back support. \n Tickets: We encourage everyone who can afford to to buy the higher priced tickets\, especially if you are not someone from the community that Otherness Archive holds space for. We appreciate your support with this. \n Content Warning: The Dark Room will feature 18+ work and is not suitable for children (be advised: sex\, nudity) \nOtherness Archive presents a selection of moving image work from both international and national filmmakers and artists who submitted to our open call as well as films found by our researchers. The intention of this archival project and exhibit is to create potential ideas and thoughts on what a trans masc archive could look like. Additionally\, to document the process of constructing an archive\, rebuilding an archive\, assembling an archive and how it can act as a no cost living resource for our community. \n“To describe such collections as archives can be controversial; to describe oneself as an archivist without the proper accreditation is hubristic. An unofficial archive creates a playground for research and representation that lives outside the bounds of traditional cataloging and binary systems. It empowers those who collect\, those who donate. It allows limits to be pushed in a way that perhaps the Arts Council England or National Lottery wouldn’t fund; allows freedom from those in power\, who have a stake in prolonging the heteronormative binaries system that we currently live within and around. It is a lawless land\, it is ours for the taking.” – Izzy Kroses (Trans Masc Studies) \nThrough our recent Arts Council grant\, we will be launching a sustainable digital publicly accessible archive focused on core categories. SUMMARY:Pioneer: Art\, Augmented Reality and Lost Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Pop Up Exhibition: Pioneers and Apparitions\n\nThis one-day exhibition showcases the cutting-edge augmented reality artworks of Luciana Haill and is the London premiere of Pioneer\, an ambitious\, augmented reality (AR) artwork which explores urgent contemporary themes around innovation\, hubris and technology elitism through a reflection on Victorian engineering. The work juxtaposes Victorian engineer Magnus Volk’s unique seagoing electric train on stilts called ‘Pioneer’ (nicknamed ‘Daddy Long Legs’ (1896-1901) to contemporary mobile technologies such as augmented reality\, 5G and SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network.\nAlso\, on show will be a newly updated version of Haill’s earlier series of augmented reality artworks entitled Apparitions\, inspired by three Victorian landmarks lost in wars\, storms and during rapid gentrification.\n\nThe artworks can be triggered using special apps and images or actually at the sites of lost heritage via geotagging. In the case of Pioneer\, the AR artwork is geotagged in such a way that the seagoing train actually appears to travel along the original route of the tracks (between Brighton and Rottingdean) as you walk the coastal path. The works are accompanied by immersive soundscapes which can be experienced using headphones or a wearable SUBPAC tactile audio system.\nThe artist\, Luciana Haill will be present and happy to demonstrate the works and answer questions.\n\n\nArtist Talk Event:\nPioneer: Art\, Augmented Reality and Lost Heritage\n7:30pm\n\n\nJoin artists Luciana Haill and Alex May for a discussion about how artists can work with augmented reality to explore lost heritage and contemporary issues around technology and gentrification\, chaired by Anna Dumitriu. Luciana Haill will present Pioneer and Apparitions and the background to her practice and ideas including her work with EEG brainwave analysis to explore lucid dreaming. Alex May will discuss the process and challenges of bringing historical and natural forms into the world using augmented reality. The presentations will be followed by a discussion and a chance for the audience to ask questions.\n\n\n\nBiographies\n\nLuciana Haill is a British contemporary artist working with new technologies\, neuroscience\, and the unconscious to make invisible mental processes visible. Her work explores lucid dreaming\, meditation and nostalgia and she is known of as a pioneer of EEG art (working with brainwave analysis) as well as augmented reality art. SUMMARY:Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:HUNGER GAMES – UNDER THE TABLECLOTH a two-course tasting menu \nA night of performance art \n\n If all the food emojis mean different queer attitudes to you\, or if you often hear yourself saying “not in front of my salad”\, explore more with our provocative performances centred around food. \nQueer food and hospitality are rooted in being outcasted by blood families or closest friends when coming out. Queer food is a story\, a journey to finding acceptance. Queer food is not ingredients or labels\, but rather the act of a performance! It’s desire\, disgust and other social and psychological modes of excess that straight culture often shames. \n\n\n18:30 doors open \n19h – 21h // Performances by Dolly Kershow – Kane Stonestreet – Mandla Rae & more \nAbout Fringe \nSince 2011\, Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fest has been an entirely volunteer-run organisation rooted in London’s queer creative scene. In Novembers\, and throughout the year\, we showcase an eclectic mix of films\, arts and events celebrating LGBTIQA+ stories from around the world\, welcoming everybody. \nFringe! started in 2011 as a community response to arts cuts carnage\, and since then we’ve ‘expanded exponentially to become one of the most innovative and exciting festivals on the circuit.’(Londonist) \nFrom feature films to experimental installations\, workshops and lively debates to wild parties\, Fringe! hosts a multitude of diverse events to tickle every one of the senses. You’ll see us flooding East London’s cinemas\, art galleries\, pop-up venues and basement clubs with the powerful\, provocative and strange. \nAs we continue to develop and our Fringe! family continues to grow\, some things stay the same: a lot of our screenings and events are free or affordable\, we remain open to new voices and ideas\, and we’ll always be queer: celebratory but critical as hell. \n \n

SUMMARY:Ugly Duck presents: These claws shine into belonging by Byuka (Sharing)
DESCRIPTION:These claws shine into belonging is a performance-ritual project created by Byuka (they/them) as part of the Intimate Animals Collective research. \nEvery Tuesday\, for the entire month of July\, Byuka facilitated ritual-workshops at Ugly Duck in correspondence with the phases of the moon. Informed by these workshops\, Byuka will present a performative work in progress piece on the 1st of September\, in collaboration with sound artist Nicole Bettencourt Coelho. \nThese claws shine into belonging is a series of experiments at creating mythologies informed by hybridity\, queerness and magic. They are focused on werewolf transformations as a framework for expanding the self\, questioning normativity and reconnecting our bodies’ rhythm to nature’s cyclicity. This is not a Hollywood trope glorification\, but an animist reflection on identity and belonging. \nThese themes are tackled through a couple of theoretical and embodiment approaches\, such as ritual\, shapeshifting techniques\, ancestral healing and embodied speculative fiction. \nAs our society changed\, the meaning we assigned to the werewolf hybrid changed. A multispecies mythology is not (only) about reframing past narratives\, but its most important role is in futuring. \nWhat is the meaning of the werewolf’s archetype and spirit in our future? Can they become an empowered ally who inspires us due to their ability to transcend nature-culture binaries?

SUMMARY:相/Phase Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:相/Phase is an interactive\, algorithmic artwork\, exploring how the abstract\, mathematical and basic\nrules of physics evolve into our infinitely varied\, macro and observable/tangible world of organisms\nand things.\n\nOriginally commissioned by Chinese Arts Now in 2020 as a digital artwork\, 相/Phase will be\npresented as a sculptural\, moving image installation for the work’s first physical exhibition. Visitors\ncan experience 相/Phase physically in the space and use a bespoke device to influence its infinite\noutcomes.\n\n相/Phase is a visual manifestation of physicist Stephen Wolfram’s theory that the universe is\ncomprised of “a set of simple rules\, that with repetition and expansion\, could contain infinite\npossibilities for creation” (Project to Find the Fundamental Theory of Physics\, 2020). This theory\nresonates with the principles of Daoist philosophy\, known as Daosim or Taoism\, founded in the late\n4th century BCE in China. The core principle of Daoism is living in harmony with the ever-changing\nrhythms of life\, with the word ‘Dao’ meaning “way or path”. Dao represents the pattern and\nsubstance of everything that exists\, acting as the underlying natural order of the universe.\nTo express these enigmatic notions\, Seph uses the aesthetics and fluidity of Chinese ink painting\,\ntranslating this ancient medium into a contemporary digital form.
