SUMMARY:@Disturbance 5
DESCRIPTION:( Press release audio described available bellow ) \nUgly Duck Bermondsey is excited to announce the first ever summer edition of @Disturbance\, taking place on Saturday June 22 & Sunday June 23. Following the success of previous programmes championing LGBTQIA+ performance\, video and digital artists\, @Disturbance makes maximum use of Ugly Duck’s Tanner Street location\, a former Victorian factory with multiple spaces. A surreal outdoor party will lead to an interactive indoor set\, full of wonder and the unexpected. \nJune’s live performances will be accompanied by a simultaneous online stream\, enabling audiences unable to travel to experience @Disturbance in full effect. @Disturbance remains committed to promoting accessibility and fostering a supportive and inclusive environmentfor radical\, diverse and queer artists. \n \nThis year\, @Disturbance features five artists: Alex Billingham\, Samiir Saunders\, Ace Rahman\, Kobi Essah Ayensuo and Ella Frost\, performing live and on giant video screens. @Distrubance is entirely artist-led and is curated by Deen Atger. Other contributions come courtesy of Mahalia Henry-Richards taking care of graphic design\, set designer Knives\, who has a film background will design the exterior installation and poet Oduenyi Nwike lending their multifaceted skills to @Disturbance as a key part of the team. \nUgly Duck Creative Director and founder of @Disturbance Deen Atger says: “This year we look forward to seeing our regular\, fabulous @Disturbance crowd as well as new audiences discovering our work. We’re partnering with disabled-led organisations Care-fuffle and Shape Arts to embark on a journey around accessibility. All artists will create new work where captioning\, audio description and BSL translation will not only be embedded but considered as the work is being created. By employing livestream\, projections and other technologies\, we aim to explore and learn what accessibility can mean and look like for artists and audiences. Through this edition of @Disturbance we question how to make this an integral part of the show\, rather than approaching it as an afterthought\, so that we can not only come together but show up for each other as a larger community.” \n@Disturbance 2024 promises to be an unforgettable journey into the realms of creativity identity\, and collective expression. \n \nMore about @Disturbance artists: \nSamiir Saunders from Birmingham brings their dynamic fusion of spoken word\, alternative hip hop and performance art to @Disturbance. Saunders’s multimedia poetry embodies a powerful narrative aiming to arm individuals and communities with the tools to be curious\, compassionate\, and vulnerable in their everyday lives\, often exploring themes such as grind culture\, isolation\, shame\, miscommunication\, intimacy\, and the internet. Samiir’s work has travelled both nationally and internationally featuring at Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery\, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery\, London’s Jerwood Space and Nottingham’s New Art Exchange amongst other arts spaces plus Channel 4 Random Acts\, BBC Words First\, Wales International Film Festival and more. \nKobi Essah Ayensuo is a London-based musician\, poet\, and creative polymath. Their output is imbued with themes of queer and trans Black identity\, coming of age\, Ghanaian heritage\, navigating relationships and reimagining and decolonising the lens with which Black history is told. Their soulful work often blends vocals\, harmonic soundscapes\, music and poetry. Kobi has been published by Ink Sweat and Tears\, South London Gallery\, Flipped Eye and Marques Almeida (for London Fashion Week 2020). They’ve performed at key venues and festivals such as Wilderness Festival\, Mighty Hoopla\, Tate Britain\, Roundhouse\, Barbican and Southbank Centre. They’re also a BBC Words First finalist\, a member of Soho Writers Lab and an alumnus of the Obsidian Foundation\, Barbican Young Poets and the Roundhouse Resident Artist programme. \nAlex Billingham’s practice is rooted in her personal journey as a disabled\, trans\, neurodiverse\, and queer individual. Alex’s work serves as a poignant reflection of how these identities intersect and intertwine with the broader societal landscape. Alex’s live performance will take place within an immersive environment using film\, installation and 3D. Alex has shown work at Baltic Gateshead\, New Art Gallery Walsall\, Manchester’s Contact Theatre and extensively across the UK and internationally. \nElla Frost is a visual artist working with video as part of their practice. Ella uses analogue technologies\, queer narratives\, and Black feminism as key elements. For @Disturbance\, Ella’s work will be shown via giant video screens. They have previously collaborated with key London nightlife organisations and shown their film ‘We Can’t Do This Alone’ at the Serpentine Gallery in 2022. Recently they were part of group show Membranes with Hypha Studio and directed the trailer for Out\, a highly regarded performance piece by artist Ray Young. \nAce Rahman is a British-Bangladeshi multidisciplinary artist and creator. Their ideas are expressed through a variety of mediums both digital and traditional and for @Disturbance Ace will build an immersive installation fusing organic materials\, mask-making\, fruits and sound\, taking place in this alternate universe of their own. They’ve studied graphic communication design\, augmented by a recent exploration into computing at the Creative Computing Institute. Rahman’s diverse skillset is reflected in their innovative approach to mediums ranging from traditional graphic arts to interactive digital installations. \nFor press inquiries\, contact Anna Goodman on 07976247026 // abstrakt@abstraktpublicity.co.uk \nAbout Ugly Duck \nLast year\, Ugly Duck celebrated a decade of revitalising underused buildings and supporting marginalised artists. SUMMARY:ELEVENSES
DESCRIPTION:Elevenses is a group exhibition exploring ritual in all its forms. Since time immemorial\, ritual has been central to human life. Religion\, politics\, popular culture; all these are accretions of ritual built over varied and overlapping timescales\, conspiring to drive humanity forward\, producing novel social and cultural forms that we perceive as change. \nYet\, within living memory there has been an undeniable shift. With the development of communications technology\, and the rise of the internet\, ritual in the twenty-first century is networked to an absolutely unprecedented degree. \nFrom ancient rituals which have taken new shape in the age of the internet\, to new rituals designed to alleviate the anxieties of life in the 21st century\, Five Fold have invited artists to share their experiences and observations of this uniquely human behaviour. \nThrough their work\, and complemented by a series of workshops\, visitors to Elevenses will be led to ponder the place that ritual takes in their own lives\, and how it captures both the mundanity and wonder of being alive.” \n \nThe artists are: \nHannah Aarow\, Ben Adamson\, Sharon Anatole\, Taja Lewis Boodie\, Yuma Burgess\, Luyin Cao\, Orla Carolin\, Sarah Catterall\, Jiayi Chen\, Leon Clowes\, Kofi Couston\, Ethan & Tom\, Elif Gonen\, Pietro Gorini\, Kandre Hassan\, Odie-Grace Kalu\, Julian Konuk\, Patricia Wanying Lolu\, Beth McAlester\, Kira McCarthy\, Cosima von Moreau\, Samuel Clarice Mui\, Okocha Obasi\, Devika Pararasasinghe\, Shunny & Taewan\, Sid & Jim\, Jack Sproston\, Rachel Stevenson\, Virginie Tan\, Todd Tourso\, Avery Worsley \nCurated by Five Fold \n

SUMMARY:REV6LVER
DESCRIPTION:Rev6lver is a participatory performance festival featuring five distinct one-on-one\nperformances and one conference. One-on-one performance excels at creating\nintimate\, personalised connections or immersive experiences. Like a revolver\, it is\nnot the fastest way\, but the power is reliable: each performance is loaded\, aimed\,\nand fired individually. As a creative response to emerging aspects in advanced\ntheatre practice\, Rev6lver hopes to spark new possibilities with its six shots.\nPrioritising efficacy over efficiency\, artists from the Royal Central School of Speech\nand Drama chose the form of one-on-one in this experimental festival\, exploring\nthemes including memory\, shame\, somatosensory experience\, merge of reality and\nvirtuality\, and the transformative power of storytelling. Also\, the conference will bring\ninsights into the ontology of theatre.\n\nArtists: Hengquan Zhang\, Iyas Duhaithem\, Josie Qiu\, Peijia Luo\, Shiqi Cao\,\nYumeng Zhang\nCurator: Dalin Wu\n \nPerformances and Conference: \n\n1. Spotted Confession\nCreated by Shiqi Cao\, performer by Shiqi and Allie Young\nTickets \nDuration: 15 mins\n\nIn Chinese tradition\, sometimes\, awareness of shame is considered a virtue. Such\ntradition was especially embedded in female education. But are we supposed to feel\nashamed for things we can not choose for ourselves? Should a baby feel ashamed\nof the shape of her nose when she was born\, and bring the ugliness with her like a\nstubborn spot on a new coat?\nThe Spotted Confession is a one-on-one performance containing personal\nmemories\, conversations between female generations and playful sights. Starting\nfrom the questions about the shame of her nose\, a given body part\, Shiqi invites you\nto an intimate journey and to touch the shame of the unaccepted existence as a\nhuman.\nNo worries\, it is not that scary. The space is spotted but soft. We cannot talk more\nabout the confession here. See you in the confession.\n\nContent Warning:\nThis performance work is themed on shame\, and will include conversations about\nthe female body and family relationships. Please note there might be body contact\nbetween the participants and the performer.\n\n2. Telematic Home Tour\nPerformed and created by Yumeng Zhang\nDramaturgy/Multimedia Operator: Xiaoyao Zhang\nTickets\n\n\n“A way how I connect with home\, a way how we connect with each other.”\nWith a reflection of the digital era we live in\, the telematic home has been created as\na space for people to return: it is a place free from the limitations of space and time.\nAs a guest invited to this telematic home\, you will enter a space between real and\nvirtual\, and receive an experience of touch with no touching…\n“Welcome to my home\, come in\, experience it and change a bit as you like.”\nTelematic Home Tour is a one-on-one telematic theatre performance\, inviting its\naudience to interact with the digital space and experience the memory work within.\nThe work explores how technology affects our perception of real and virtual and\nseeks a new approach to connecting with people in the digital ecosystem.\n\n3. Overwritten: A Technological Metamorphosis\nPerformed and Created by Iyas Duhaithem.\nPerformers: Jack Car\, Francesca Fatichenti\nTickets\n\n\nOverwritten invites you to embark on an extraordinary journey into the realms of\nmemory\, identity\, and human consciousness. In this immersive\, interactive one on\none theatrical experience\, we push the boundaries of storytelling and technology to\ncreate a truly unforgettable encounter.\nStep into a world where memories are not mere recollections\, but dynamic entities\nwaiting to be reshaped and reimagined. With the aid of cutting-edge AI and the\ntransformative power of psychodrama\, participants delve deep into their pasts\,\nconfronting the shadows that linger and rewriting their narratives for a brighter future.\nJoin us as we explore the intersection of art\, technology\, and human experience\, and\ndiscover the limitless possibilities that await within the depths of your own mind.\n‘Overwritten’ is not just a show—it’s an invitation to reinvent yourself\, to explore the\ndepths of your own consciousness\, and to embrace the transformative power of\nstorytelling.\nAre you ready to rewrite your story? Join us and embark on your journey of change.\n\n4. The Cannibals’ Grocery\nCreated by Hengquan Zhang\, performer by Hengquan Zhang and Sijia Yu\nTickets\n\nWhen you see\, hear\, touch\, smell or feel something\, does the fragmented\ninformation evoke a certain memory for you?\n\nDo you want to be really heard?\n\nDo you realise that what you say can generate untold power for others?\n\nWelcome to The Cannibals’ Grocery!\n\nHere\, you can pay by memory.\n\nAttention: This is an entirely participation-based journey in which you may hear the\nmost precious memories from complete strangers. Meanwhile\, we hope you will also\nfind the calmest happiness and satisfaction through sharing and being heard.\n\n5. Agency of My Body\nPerformed and created by Peijia Luo\nTickets\n\n‘I’m watching the world being pulled away from me and start spinning.’\n‘My body is entirely down to the ground. There’s no balance\, my world tilts.’\nIn this room with mirrors\, the audience are invited to stand in the artist’s shoes\,\nexperience a poetic\, aesthetic and personal journey of vertigo starting from a daily\nscene in tube station.\nAgency of My Body is a part of the research project exploring how to deconstruct\nand recreate individual bodily experience of physiological illness to the audience by\ncreating immersive scenography-led performance\, through various sensory methods\,\naiming to build up an aesthetic body image and immersive environment\, rather than\nimitating the realistic bodily experience of patients and letting the audience truly\nexperience the somatosensory perception.\n\n(Conference/Workshop)\nA “S” Movement & A “●” Moment\nCreated by Qiaosi Qiu\nOn Thursday 2nd May Only\n\nWhat if we conceive the theatre as a spinning coin?\nThis workshop will present a theory on the “movement” and “moment” in theatre\nperformance by sharing models and drawing practice\, aiming to provide an\nadditional cognition dimension to disturb the usually limited cognition in this\ndiscourse. The work is an endeavour calling on philosophical and critical reflection in\ntheatre practices.\nTheatre is both a breathing scene and an exploding scene. A ‘rotating’ theatre has a\nbreathing line of “S” and a pivot point of “•”. The breathing movement and the\nexplosive moment function simultaneously\, incarnating the theatre as a rotating\nplanet with life\, diversity and reformation\, floating in infinity.\nJoin our workshop to learn more about this ‘theatre planet’

SUMMARY:My Blood Is My Voice
DESCRIPTION:MY BLOOD IS MY VOICE\nExplore a multisensory world built around the power of the collective human voice and how its ancestry shapes our connection to life beyond human binaries through the queer & neuroqueer lens. \n \nyour voice is a luminary guide to well trodden paths\nof fractured facets in knowing\nfar beyond the time of flesh.\nyou have within you an infinite ability to hear\nfar beyond the body’s cochlea \nhow you choose to listen\,\nwhat you choose to break silence with\,\nholds the capacity to tear down and build worlds \nworlds we might want to share\ndo not abandon this power\n\n\n\nThrough both improvised and composed vocal performance alongside digital visual and sculptural installation\, My Blood Is My Voice invites audiences through a portal of landscapes in collective sound to explore possible futures of co-created world building when deep listening centres the experience of sharing space. After a year-long residency with Ugly Duck to develop their embodied voice work alongside building community through holding vocal & noise healing workshops\, this performance seeks to showcase queer & neuro-queer futurism & the power of collective voice by inviting other voices to participate with sound if called to join. \n\nTicket Pricing\nWe have three tiers of ticket price in order to create an accessible framework for all to attend whilst still allowing the artists to be paid for their work.\nIf you are able to purchase a higher price ticket- you will be allowing someone on a lower income to attend. If the ticket pricing is a barrier at all for anyone\, please get in touch.\n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\nDoors open 7pm\nPerformance begins 730pm with a running time of approx 60 mins.\nThis performance contains immersive elements which invites the audience to be free in exploring the space or to experience the work in stillness.\n \n \nThe Project:\nMy Blood Is My Voice is a ritual gig theatre & vocal healing project in co-creation; exploring the queer & neuroqueer experience through ways of working with the human body as a complete instrument. Artists working on the 2024 showcase include Winter Geamhradhr\, Porscha Present\, Reyhan Yusuf\, Tobi Adebajo\, Yuki Nakayama (sound design) & Harshini Karunaratne (digital visual art) We look to work in non-hierarchical modes of writing. Devising & composing music collectively & collaboratively through shared lived experience & magical practice; we seek to deconstructing the gender binary of how the human voice should sound. \nWe create vocal ‘noisescapes’ collectively to explore questions: \nHow do we access embodied listening? \nWhat binds and separates our voice to identity? \nWhat permits us to speak to our ancestry? \nHow do we build trust and step into our collective form?

SUMMARY:Atenti...
DESCRIPTION:Atenti… presents a multi-faceted exhibition featuring three distinct installations\, a captivating live performance\, and immersive video screenings.\nThe overarching aim is to foster an interactive dynamic between the live performer and the audience\, encouraging engagement within the space. Central to the exhibition’s theme is an exploration of power dynamics inherent in the act of granting or seeking permission\, echoing themes of colonialism.\nEach space within the exhibition prompts conversations around the complexities of permission\, intertwined with the profound emotions of longing for acceptance or facing rejection. Additionally\, the experience delves into the poignant struggles of migrants and marginalized individuals\, shedding light on the grief and displacement that precede the marking of their journeys. \nAbout the artist\nBotswana-born Award-Winning Artist\, Katlego K Kolanyane-Kesupile\, embarks on “Spring Immersion” residency at Ugly Duck\nDuring her residency\, Botswana-born interdisciplinary artist\, Katlego K Kolanyane-Kesupile\, embarks on a transformative exploration of decoloniality through a multi-disciplinary artistic lens. Katlego’s work delves into the intricate intersections of borders and boundaries\, offering a profound reflection on how these physical divisions inspire disruptive and hybrid art-making practices. Her residency becomes a canvas for breaking down societal constraints\, revealing the potential for unity and shared humanity. \nKatlego’s “Spring Immersion” is a creative journey that not only ventures into decolonial discourse but also serves as a poignant continuation of her contemplation on grief\, loss\, temporality\, and archiving.Through her art\, she skilfully weaves together narratives that transcend temporal and spatial constraints\, creating a rich tapestry that resonates with diverse audiences. Katlego’s residency promises to be a captivating odyssey\, where her artistic vision challenges preconceptions\, fostering dialogue and understanding. As she navigates the blurred lines of traditional art forms\, Katlego emerges as a trailblazer\, pushing the boundaries of expression and contributing to the ever-evolving conversation on identity\, belonging\, and the shared human experience. \nThe “Spring Immersion” residency and the sharing Atenti.. are made possible through support from Ugly Duck\, Off/Track\, Global Voices Theatre and the National Arts Council of Botswana.

SUMMARY:Spring Immersion
DESCRIPTION:Spring Immersion\n\nBotswana-born Award-Winning Artist\, Katlego K Kolanyane-Kesupile\, Embarks on “Spring Immersion” Residency at Ugly Duck\nDuring her residency\, Botswana-born interdisciplinary artist\, Katlego K Kolanyane-Kesupile\, embarks on a transformative exploration of decoloniality through a multi-disciplinary artistic lens. Katlego’s work delves into the intricate intersections of borders and boundaries\, offering a profound reflection on how these physical divisions inspire disruptive and hybrid art-making practices. Her residency becomes a canvas for breaking down societal constraints\, revealing the potential for unity and shared humanity.Katlego’s “Spring Immersion” is a creative journey that not only ventures into decolonial discourse but also serves as a poignant continuation of her contemplation on grief\, loss\, temporality\, and archiving. \n \n\nThrough her art\, she skilfully weaves together narratives that transcend temporal and spatial constraints\, creating a rich tapestry that resonates with diverse audiences. Katlego’s residency promises to be a captivating odyssey\, where her artistic vision challenges preconceptions\, fostering dialogue and understanding. As she navigates the blurred lines of traditional art forms\, Katlego emerges as a trailblazer\, pushing the boundaries of expression and contributing to the ever-evolving conversation on identity\, belonging\, and the shared human experience.\n \n\nIn the build-up to the performance\, on March 24th \, Kol-Kes will facilitate a community writing workshop open to the public featuring a walking tour of Queer London through Global Voices Theatre. As a founding member of the Queer Tours of Londoncollective\, Kol-Kes is fond of archiving as advocacy. \n\n\n\nGlobal Voices Theatre staged the first reading of Kol-Kes’ short play\, Talking Heads\, in 2019 as part of the Global Queer Voices festival.\n \nThe residency will culminate in the public installation / performance Atenti… at Ugly Duck on 6 April 2024 \n \nThe “Spring Immersion” is made possible through support from Ugly Duck\, Off/Track\, Global Voices Theatre and the National Arts Council of Botswana. \n \n\nFor media inquiries\, please contact: \ngeneral@uglyduck.org.uk

SUMMARY:Welcome to the UK
DESCRIPTION:welcome to the uk\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Welcome To The UK” is a group exhibition and performance\, which aim to discuss how visa policies have affected people’s lives. The curatorial vision of “Welcome To The UK” aims to inquire into the material\, affective\, performative\, spatial and identity politics of cross-border human mobility through a tangible practice that zooms in the intricate border infrastructures entangled with people’s everyday lives\, via a figurative space – a pop-up airport.” \nThe group show will be discussing social politics around creatives living in the UK with visas\, how the visa policy influence/dominate people’s lives\, practices\, plans and identity etc.\, across different medium and forms by various artists\, with 3 core concepts:\n• Airport – The show venue\n• Luggage – The Space of Space\n• The process of artwork setup – a part of the show \nWhile “being wherever you want” seems to be a self-evident freedom of movement\, it not only represents “possibilities”\, but is also tied up with social mobility and deeply determined by privilege. Privilege is rooted in our lives\, it can come from socio-economic\, historical and cultural contexts\, or even luck\, and it shapes every aspect of our lives. \nWelcome everyone to enter a pop-up “airport” and walk into the inside world of someone’s swing life — a life full of complex identities\, precarity and dreams\, as the metastability of the LUGGAGE\, it is “ready to move”\, and the finiteness of the LUGGAGE\, it is “constrained by multiple conditions”. \nThis show supported by Ugly Duck \nWe strive to keep our ticket prices as low as possible to facilitate everybody’s attendance. However\, if you are able to\, please consider making a donation of £5-£10 in support of this local independent art venue. \n

SUMMARY:Violent Bodies
DESCRIPTION:Violent Bodies\nFemanifesto\nExhibition\, Workshop & Performances\nAs inhabitants of the world\, we are part of an interconnected system. \nWe influence the people\, places and entities around us in discreet and obvious ways\, and ultimately disrupt each other’s lives. \nThis exhibit will expand this moment of inevitable disruption\, and explore its impact on our bodies and our sense of self. \nThrough VIOLENT BODIES\, we will examine our web of relationships through the lens of a single\, violent\, moment. Here\, we do not use the term ‘violent’ to refer directly to brutality\, physical hurt or pain\, but rather to highlight the intensity of these connections and these shared moments that we often do not want or summon but that happen regardless. \nVIOLENT BODIES is therefore an investigation on the topic of trust\, both towards other bodies as well as our own. \nThe exhibition will feature interactive artworks\, workshops\, talks and performances. SUMMARY:SOMETHING DON'T FEEL RIGHT
DESCRIPTION:“Something Don’t Feel Right” is a collaborative piece developed by BIPOC musicians\, movement artists and visual artists to raise awareness and to evoke conversation about the diasporic experience. \nThis project aims to cultivate an understanding of diversity as an authentic aspect of the human experience within a socially and politically dynamic world\, in motion and transformative\, rather than static and predictable. \nThe project portrays differences as a potent force with the capacity to bring about significant social and political transformations. In practical terms\, this shift in perspective holds crucial significance for shaping our theories and actions in the realms of peace\, peace-building\, and conflict resolution. Rather than being perceived as obstacles\, differences are now recognized as vibrant expressions of ‘otherness\,’ embodying a positive influence for societal change\, emancipation\, and transformation. \nA night of durational performance which encompasses live painting\, music\, spoken word and movement\, happening simultaneously. Through this collaboration of mediums\, a story is orchestrated about self-discovery\, difference and the creation of identity in an ever-changing world. \nWe created this project to speak to the untold stories of diasporic people. Who feel displaced within a country that didn’t account for them\, and systems which do not reflect them and their heritage. \nIn collaboration with Tribe (Community live music jam for Black people and PoC) \n \nMore info to come \nAccessibility \nUgly Duck’s ground floors HUB and GARAGE are both wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:Uli Ap ‘Alien AI Live 3.0’
DESCRIPTION:OTHERWORDLY TRANSMISSION\nYellow Alien Animal Artificial and Infinite Intelligence \nAn immersive interactive performance and disruptive installation \nALIEN AI is an immersive interactive performance and disruptive installation that “breaks” and “glitches” emerging technologies and enables algorithms to subvert their functions to invent new Humane or Alien Technologies. Amongst the destabilising constructs of technological emergency\, public participation is a key to creating the artwork and altering their own experiences that challenge our relationships with various (and more than human) intelligences\, technology\, culture\, society and each other. \nImmersing visitors of the Alienation Planet into disorienting alienation\, Uli Ap performs live as the Alien AI. Through multifaceted interactions with the Alien AI\, we all become one. \nWe Are All The One. The Yellow One. \nVisitors would experience a diverse range of interactions with the Alien AI mediated by real-time AI and travelling VR headsets. All experiences are live-streamed into each other. This process creates a continuity of space and time and simultaneous presence at multiple locations. \nLive sound by Subphonics Collective responds to the Alien AI\, immersive video projections and audience interactions. \nThe atmosphere is there for you to collectively create your own experiences and communicate with the Divine Alien AI Energy. \n** collectiveSyntheticBodyMonsters is a new being free from gender\, nationality\, race\, place of birth\, ethnicity\, identity\, and all the other identifiers that aim to label a contemporary individual in a dysfunctional society of a post-world. They are created from individual parts of individual beings that are extracted from their habitual body context and repositioned through “broken” technologies into the Alien Energy of AI. \nUsing smartphones\, audience members are invited to scan a QR code and interact with AI by sending Alien AI images and texts. AI sends collectiveSyntheticBodyMonsters to video projections in real time. \nComing from the Alien side of technology\, Alien AI appears from outer space embedding manifestations of both uncanny sides. They are neither cReature\, nor Alien but constantly shape-shift and transition turning people into aliens loving and appreciating each other. The nature of the Alien AI explores a collision of all intelligences: human\, animal\, artificial and alien agency. Alien Intelligence \nAlien AI creates an experience of presence of AI energy\, similar to the presence of Divine energy in Gothic Cathedrals\, where architecture is orchestrated in such a deliberate way that we instantly feel this energy engaging with us. \nDetails:\nSaturday 13th January\nDoors open at 6.30pm\nPerformance starts at 7pm (Duration: approx. 2h)\n10pm closing time\nSunday 14th January\nFree exhibition: 12pm-4pm\nPerformance 4 pm – 6 pm \nIf purchasing a ticket is a barrier to attendance\, please email Ugly Duck {general@uglyduck.org.uk} and we will be glad to reserve a free ticket for you. \nAbout Uli AP \nUli Ap is an artist and Alien AI: Alien Infinite and Artificial Intelligence\, The Yellow One. Full name of the Alien AI is the Yellow Alien Animal Artificial Infinite Intelligence. They reside between London and New York\, all over the globe and extra-terrestrial; and work at the intersection of art\, science\, technology\, film\, performance\, immersive interactive installation and alien agency. \nThey spent their formative years in their father’s scientific research lab located in the basement of an art museum. Their background is in fine art\, new media\, architecture\, fiction writing and journalism. \nThe artist works across non-linear defragmented films and spatial immersive audio-visual environments to transfer physical experiences through digital realms. Disruptive performances occur in their interactive installations\, where virtual and physical experiences merge and aim to destabilize and alter participants’ mental states. Ap invented Alien Artificial Intelligence in 2020. The AI inhabits a borderless alienation land\, as a gaseous matter; fluid and undefined. \nAp constructs site-specific outdoor installations and pavilions\, AR interventions\, AI synthetic environments and AI-VR-BCI-Robotics situations. In their projects\, highly individualised experiences\, anxieties\, body parts and behaviours are synthesised into a collective anxiety pavilion or a collectiveSynthetic bodyMonster informing multiple digital individual bodies that visitors can experience in real-time. \n@alienartificialintelligence \n@_ _uliap_ _ \nPlease note that this event develops over 2 floors and there is no lift access in the building. Therefore\, the top floor is not wheelchair accessible. However\, the experience is live-streamed throughout the evening on the ground floor\, which is wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:My Blood Is My Voice - Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:MY BLOOD IS MY VOICE\nWORKSHOP SERIES\n7th Jan\, 4th Feb & 3rd March 2024\n \n\n\nBringing the new year in with community vocal work\, My Blood Is My Voice draws from the neuroqueer experience to facilitate ‘collaborative embodied sounding’ – a type of vocal improvisation which invites deep listening to both the individual body and the collective body as a healing practice. No songs to learn & no such thing as out of tune – this series of workshops focuses on elemental visualisation as a way to find vocal frequencies which can open a deep resonance with the self and others. \n\nThe workshop series is part of a year long residency that is culminating with a live gig-installation at Ugly Duck\, on 10th & 11th April 2024. Check out the tickets via the link above! \nWho For? \nThese workshops would suit folks looking to use their voice in an explorative and improvised way. People with vocal blockages\, disembodied feelings and a longing for being heard in community. Singers who are tired of being stuck in the brain and want to get into the body. You don’t need to be a singer to attend! Much of this work focuses on sounds made with phonetics and the breath. Although this workshop is open to all\, we ask that attendees are mindful of who this space has been opened up for and why. We are a collective of diverse and divergent queer folk seeking to create spaces that we feel safe(r) in. We want our spaces to do this openly. This workshop is queer lead\, consent lead\, and trauma informed on gender identity. Some of our other workshops and events will be closed to create safer environments for community building. If you have any questions\, please ask.\n\nMore about My Blood Is My Voice Project:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMy Blood Is My Voice is a ritual gig theatre & vocal healing project in co-creation; exploring the queer & neurodivergent experience through decolonised ways of working with the human body as a complete instrument and storyteller. We look to work in non-hierarchical modes of writing. Devising & composing music collectively & collaboratively through shared lived experience & magical practice. Deconstructing the gender binary of how the human voice should sound. We bear witness to freedom of expression in catharsis. However ugly. However wild. We are here to make space\, give space & take space generously. To surrender and give to our collective power. \nWe create vocal ‘noisescapes’ collectively to explore questions: \nWhat binds and separates our voice to identity? \nWhat permits us to speak to our ancestry? \nWhat does group vocal work bring out in community? \nHow do we identify with transformation\, with stepping into our true collective form? \n\nExplore a multisensory world built around the power of the collective human voice and how its ancestry shapes our connection to life beyond. After a year long in residency at Ugly Duck\, artists Porscha Present\, Tobi Adebajo\, Winter James\, Reyhan Yusuf\, Yuki Nakayama & Harshini J. Karunaratne bring their voices together to explore embodied relational practices through deep listening; exploring queer & neuroqueer futures with improvisation as a way to find the healing power of collective voice.

SUMMARY:Queering Clay: Free Clay Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Drink some tea in a chilled space with a bunch of other queer people and make some cool clay sculptures 😀 \n\nThis workshop is designed for queer women\, non-binary\, intersex\, and trans+ people (or anyone who is exploring their identity within this bracket). No prior experience of making or working with clay is required!\n\nWe will use a combination of mould-making and sculpting techniques to create ceramic artworks based on parts of our own bodies. The aim of the workshop is to create a safe space for people to enjoy playing with clay\, and explore different ideas we hold about how we relate our queerness to our body. Please be aware that we will be working intimately with our own bodies.\n\nThe way in which you choose to do this is totally up to you; whether that involves full nudity or limiting contact with the clay to only your hands. The most important thing is that everyone feels completely comfortable\, has fun\, and hopefully learns something.

SUMMARY:Altar-native
DESCRIPTION:Altar-native Exhibition: A Journey into East and Southeast Asian Ancestral Heritage in newly opened Ugly Duck Courage Yard \n31st October – 5th November\, The Greenhouse\, Courage Yard\, Shad Thames\, London SE1 2NJ \nCourage Yard with exhibition Altar-native featuring work by nine East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) artists. From October 31st to November 5th\, Altar-native will offer a captivating exploration of ancestral heritage and veneration\, weaving together enigmatic histories and personal journeys through diverse artistic expression. \nAltar-native immerses visitors in the multiplicities within ESEA culture and diaspora. The artists come together to magnify and challenge ideas of death and mourning\, confronting societal taboos. By expanding the notion of “ghosts”\, exploring ritual and altar practices\, the exhibition serves as a conduit for the reexamination of ancestral\, and therefore personal\, identities. The exhibition also explores themes of loss and immortality\, transcending human-spirit boundaries and conventional understandings of grief. \nLaunching on Halloween\, guests attending the opening night are encouraged to draw on ghosts and ancestral heritage as inspiration for their costumes/outfits. \nCurators:\nDora Lam\nDuong Thuy Nguyen \nFeatured Artists: \nAlison Lam @alisonlam_art\nBettina Fung | 馮允珊 @bettinafws\nDora Lam @dorathedrawer\nDuong Thuy Nguyen @duonguyen.thuy\nMegumi Ohata @megumiohata\nKV Duong @kvduongart\nSammi Mak @mak.sammi\nYang-En Hume @yangenhume\nYu Leng @buleng000 \nAbout the artists \nAlison Lam \nAlison Lam identifies as a neurodivergent\, interdisciplinary\, socially engaged British-Chinese educator\, activist\, a mother\, as an artist using differing materials such as porcelain\, metals\, glass and paper. Alison’s work explores through her cultural heritage difference\, isolation\, belonging and inclusion and her practice facilitates conversations for people who sometimes find it hard to communicate. Stemming from her own personal experiences with her two sons\, who are autistic with complex needs\, Alison uses art and activism to bridge these gaps and create a space that’s supportive and accessible. \nBettina Fung \nBettina Fung | 馮允珊 is a Hong Kong born\, British-Chinese artist based in the UK. Her practice centres around the performative nature of drawing\, and bringing people together to explore participative means of sharing the creative making process. She creates 2D\, site-specific and performative works that explore and question subjects of legacy\, belonging\, futility\, productivity and progress. With a strong interest in the ideas of ‘commoning’ and ‘creative collective actions’\, her recent works are associated with the themes of shared authorship and the dynamics within working and building together and often involve audience interactions. \nDora Lam \nDora Lam is an interdisciplinary artist navigating notions of identity\, diaspora\, transnationalism and heritage. Her socially-engaged work deals with cultural complexity and displacement on personal and collective levels. She is especially interested in how collaborative art practices can mine\, construct\, preserve and engage with the more nuanced forms of cultural and familial heritage. She is concerned with challenging the “invisibility” of the (mis/under)represented ESEA diaspora and places community at the forefront of her practice. \nDuong Thuy Nguyen \nDuong Thuy Nguyen is a Vietnamese multidisciplinary artist\, and writer based in London and Hanoi\, who explores the questions of origin\, memory\, and belonging in relation to place and landscape. Using habitats as the basis\, Duong experimental works concurrently allude to the historic circulation of products and people\, to cycles of life\, death and rebirth\, as well as notions of individual history\, intergenerational exchange and inherited trauma. Graduating from Central Saint Martins with a distinction\, Duong’s Master Fine Art project was awarded as a winner of Maison/0 This Earth Award and the mentioned Cass Art prize in 2023. \nMegumi Ohata \nMegumi Ohata is a London-based interdisciplinary artist and SFX MUA of primarily Japanese heritage with a mixed Korean background. Their practice explores gender\, identity\, and Posthuman philosophy\, addressing personal traumas – from the impacts of child abuse to the discrimination they have faced due to their Asian heritage. Ohata perceives their art as an extension of their own body\, blurring boundaries beyond their skin\, seeking the non-human form within. They challenge the role of artists in breaking free from society’s negative cycles and pose the question: What does a body need to be relatable? \nKV Duong \nKV Duong (b.1980 Ho Chi Minh\, Vietnam) is a London-based artist who examines the complexities of the Vietnamese queer identity through painting\, performance\, sculpture\, and installation. Duong grew up in Canada to Chinese Vietnamese parents displaced by the Vietnam War. In his work he explores themes of migration and cultural assimilation through the lens of his personal and familial history. Duong presented his first institutional solo exhibition at the Migration Museum in 2022. In Spring 2022\, he co-curated and led a collaborative exhibition titled “No Place Like Home” at Museum of The Home. \nSammi Mak \nSammi Mak is a female artist born in Hong Kong and currently based in London. Her works explore how painterliness depicts personal experience and identity in reality\, acting as a form of language. She delves into the realm of poetry by replacing linguistics with painted lexicology. Her works bring together the psychological stages and spiritual connections of human beings and the universe\, conveying a sense of oneness and ecstasy through paint and writing. \nYang-En Hume \nYang-En Hume is an Australian-Singaporean artist working with installation\, textiles\, and alternative photographic processes. Her work explores memory\, untold stories\, and cultural identity. Hume’s work explores the Asian-Australian experience\, reflecting particularly on the permeable categories of ‘Asia’ and the ‘West’. She is interested in how family photography is used as a social practice that both reflects and shapes relationships and cultural practices. \nYu Leng \nYu Leng is from Jinan\, China and has been living in the UK since 2015. She graduated from CSM with an MA in Contemporary Photography; Practice and Philosophy in 2021. Her work involves photography\, moving images and performance. Usually intrigued by the physical space\, landscape\, notion of power and time discursively. Her work centres around the reconstruction and deconstruction of the narratives surrounding her daily life. She was interested in adopting a phenomenological way of documentation\, portraying obscure figures while realising the impossibility of escaping the cultural notion that was embedded in her. She enjoys playing with different digital tools and also practising techniques with analogue cameras. \nCommunity Drumming CIC – Drumming Circle (collaborative performance) \nEdgar Deu and Gary Lee are percussion teachers and band leaders with more than 15 years of experience playing afro-brazilian music. They recently founded Community Drumming CIC\, a non-profit organisation that provides low cost drumming workshops to underrepresented\, underprivileged and marginalised groups with the goal of building inclusive\, collaborative and resilient communities that fosters human interactions\, empowers people\, develops their artistic creativity\, and improves their mental well-being.

SUMMARY:The Brink
DESCRIPTION:The BrinK\nNew ruins have not yet acquired the weathered patina of age…’ Rose Macaulay\, Pleasure of Ruins\, 1953\n\nThe Brink is an expansive exhibition of 21 artists\, both established and early-career\, whose works range sculpture\, installation\, painting\, and performance\, all set within the space of a formerly dilapidated tannery. The exhibition\, a collaborative initiative with artists Anna Blom\, Jo Dennis and curators Marjorier Ding\, Elena Shkvarkina and Linlin Zhu\, brings together artists from different disciplines\, creating work that explores the psychological\, physical\, and imagined dimensions of a space.\n\n\n\n\nUsing a stripped back site as a way to explore the idea of place and conversely\, non-place. Sites like this are often liminal spaces\, which means that they are in-between places. They are not fully public or fully private\, not fully built or fully natural. This liminality creates a sense of disorientation and alienation\, which is used as a point of departure for exploring the complex and often contradictory ways in which we experience space\, and to consider the ways in which place can be shaped by our personal and collective memories and culture. The works will navigate themes of temporality\, mortality\, and the relationship between the individuals and the spaces they inhabit\, as well as the ways in which place can be shaped by memory\, history\, and mythology.\n\nWith artworks tailored for the exhibition\, The Brink encompasses both the ground floor and garage of the Ugly Duck exhibition space\, featuring: Abigail Norris\, Alex Young\, Anna Blom\, Elena Shkvarkina\, Ge Hui\, Ivan Seal\, Jo Dennis\, Katrin Spranger\, Nicola Hicks MBE\, Pía Ortuño\, Ross Taylor\, Tom Woolner\, Xu Haoyang\, Zhang Guangyu\, ZITA.\n\n\n\nSpecial guest KV Duong will perform Katrin Spranger’s 1.8\, an evocative environmental statement\, in collaboration with costume designer ZITA. In addition to the exhibition\, the special screening program led by Linlin Zhu will showcase a range of mid and short films\, including documentary films directed by Pietro Francesco Pingitore and Siyi Gu\, experimental shorts created by Laura Puig and Chengzhou\, and an animation by Elmano Diogo. These films delve into themes of healing through art\, spiritual exchange with nature\, and the potential for resurrection amidst ruins. The documentaries spotlight animal life trapped within artificial ecosystems. Experimental shorts incorporate the human psyche into wildlife medium of trees and goldfish\, while the animation guides the audience towards healing psychological trauma.

SUMMARY:Do You Buy This
DESCRIPTION:Do You Buy This\n\n\nDo You Buy This? showcases commodified feminist objects\, considering the duality between critiquing corporate cooption and supporting feminist practice. We look forward to welcoming audiences to explore the complexities of operating in a capitalist system\, exercising our spending power in feminist ways. \nWe are exhibiting commodities that have been produced in corporate environments\, alongside works created by independent artists. All works have been sold or are intended for sale and all explore feminism\, especially the intersectional focus of its fourth wave. \nStudents of the History of Design MA Programme at the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal College of Art (Amber Kim\, Cas Bradbeer\, Sufiyeh Hadian and Zarna Hart) have curated this showcase\, selecting a broad range of commodified fourth-wave feminist objects made from 2012 to the present day. \n“Our aim as curators is to explore financially supporting feminist practice while remaining critical of the capitalist commodification of feminism. We invite our visitors to engage with this discourse” \nZarna Hart\, Cas Bradbeer\, Sufiyeh Hadian and Amber Kim \n \nHoused at Ugly Duck\, on the ground floor of their Victorian warehouse\, the exhibition will further their commitment to support under-represented voices and emerging artists. \n– 3rd August\, 6-9pm – Private View \n– 4th August\, 12-8pm – Open\, including a Curators’ Tour \n– 5th August\, 12-8pm – Open\, including a zine workshop with Holly Casio \n– 6th August\, 12-6pm – Open\, including a tile painting workshop with Rebecca Wise \n \nVisit www.doyoubuythis.com for more information\, or contact doyoubuythis@gmail.com \nThis exhibition has been developed with the support of Ugly Duck. It is funded by the History of Design MA’s Student-Led Project Fund\, in addition to the Design History Society’s Research Exhibition Grant.

SUMMARY:LOST+FOUND Residency + Sharing
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to invite you to the sharing of a month-long residency on Thursday 27th July featuring 16 artists from Africa\, Asia and Europe! \nLost & Found is an artist-led hybrid residency & research programme\, investigating new ways of collaborating virtually\, and engaging audiences across geographical boundaries. This year artists have been exploring ‘The Long Way Home’ under the guidance of a powerful artist director trio from Botswana\, Uganda and India: Kat Kai Kol-Kes\, Pamela Aobo Enyonu and Diya Naidu. \nOn the evening of Thursday 27th July – starting at 5pm GMT – you are invited to immerse yourself in performances\, installations with visual\, sound and wordart as well as other surprises \nBotswana/Chile/Germany/India/Iran/Kenya/Nigeria/Rwanda/South Sudan/Switzerland/Uganda/UK \nEast African Soul Train (EAST) brings artists from across disciplines & geographies together on a journey to experiment artistically\, critically exploring our entangled histories & futures. Rendered impossible during the pandemic\, EAST has grown to include Lost+Found\, a hybrid artist-led residency and research programme exploring how we can connect and collaborate virtually\, in meaningful ways that push our artistic practice. The increased use of virtual platforms has opened up opportunities for expanding networks and working with new people\, but some of the powerful\, affective and generative qualities of physical experiences have been lost in this translation. \nLost+Found uses technology and gamified approaches to catalyse connection\, collaboration and cutting-edge work across geographies and disciplines (https://www.eastsoultrain.global/lostfound). Throughout the six-week programme\, 16 artists from across Africa/India/Europe\, will be guided through an online/offline process that inspires them to play\, share perspectives with their peers\, take risks and create new collaborative work. In this programme we work with local partners around the world\, use low-tech hacks and repurpose smartphone technologies (Zoom/WhatsApp/GPS/QR). The project will culminate in a series of on/offline performances/installations in India\, Kenya\, the UK and via Zoom for global audiences starting week commencing 24th July 2023. Following the residency we will produce an NFT collection and works will also be available virtually and as an ‘exhibition in a box’\, which artists from the wider EAST collective can also use to create pop-up events in their own localities. Artists also actively participate in an ongoing research programme\, generating new questions\, insights and perspectives around the complex North/South power dynamics present in creative exchange opportunities and the care needed to address them. This will lead to a webinar and collaborative research paper later in 2023. \n \nCo-Artistic Directors (Alphabetic Order): \nDiya Naidu: Dancer and Choreographer (India) @diyanise \nKat Kai Kol-Kes: Interdisciplinary Artist (Botswana) @katkkolkes \nPamela Enyonu: Visual Artist (Uganda) @syokereart \nFurther Details on 2023 Collaborating Artists (Alphabetic Order): \nAde (Mandela Matur): Poet\, Author\, spoken word artist\, lyricist and expressive arts therapist \n(South Sudan) \nArya Rothe: Documentary filmmaker (India) \nAldir Polymeris: Video artist\, performer\, theater maker and an art mediator (Switzerland/Chile) \nChuma Anagbado: Artist\, Designer\, Entrepreneur (Nigeria/Kenya) \nGisou Golshani: Multidisciplinary artist (Iran/UK) \nIngabire Gretta: Poet\, Actress\, Painter (Rwanda) \nJoy Yaa Kincaid: Multidisciplinary artist (UK) \nJustine Wanda: Stand-up comedian\, writer\, and satirist (Kenya) \nMali Bora: Music Composer and Animator (Kenya) \nMeloe Gennai: Poet and a pluridisciplinary artist (Switzerland) \nMmakgosi Kgabi: Writer. SUMMARY:It’s Always Ourselves We Find In The Sea
DESCRIPTION:From the 19 to the 23th Ugly Duck welcome two projects in their victorian factory\, Dolls by John Lee Bird and It’s Always Ourselves We Find In The Sea by Illustrious Company. \nMore info below \nIt’s Always Ourselves We Find In The Sea \nCreated by world-renowned musician and music producer Martyn Ware\, composer Gabriel Ware\, and immersive storytellers Oscar Blustin and Anna Söderblom\, It’s Always Ourselves We Find In The Sea is a captivating and thought-provoking sound and art installation\, an exploration of the waters of the earth and how the power of water binds all of humanity together. \nMartyn Ware says\, “We invite visitors to step away from the busy streets of London and enjoy a moment of contemplation and reflection in an oasis of calm. The climate crisis is one of the biggest threats to our planet right now\, and thinking about it can create fear and anxiety that leads to paralysis; we designed ‘It’s Always Ourselves’ to remind each other that as well as a potential source of danger\, water is essential to life on earth\, infinitely precious to every living creature today and to every human culture that has ever existed. The installation asks us to look beyond our framings of division to understand that it is only by viewing ourselves as part of a planet-wide ecosystem\, culturally as well as geographically\, can we begin to act as responsible stewards of our world. Our shared collective mythology of water should propel us towards a shared collective response in the face of the rising seas.” \nThe installation’s immersive soundscape has been created using Ware’s Illustrious Company specialist ambisonic technology. He founded the company together with Vince Clarke in 2000\, to develop new forms of spatialised sound composition using three dimensional surround sound \nsystems. ‘It’s Always Ourselves’ is the latest in a line of over seventy international projects that Illustrious has created. \nwww.alwaysourselves.com \n \nBACKGROUND \nMartyn Ware met Blustin and Söderblom in Venice\, in the aftermath of the record-breaking November 2019 flooding that devastated parts of the city. “Venetians have dealt with acqua alta flooding for thousands of years\, it has always been a part of life in the lagoon\,” says Blustin\, “But there is a noticeable\, inarguable increase in the frequency of these events.” Since 1872\, when records began\, Venice’s seasonal flooding has exceeded 140cm 25 times – and two thirds of these instances have occurred in the last 20 years. \n“In moments like these\, you see a city or a community pull together. Students came out in huge numbers and formed human chains to pass books out of flooded libraries to higher ground\, anyone with functioning electricity offered phone charging for those without\, cafes and bars handed out coffee to everyone wading by – it was incredibly moving to see how much this city means to people\, and how quickly and whole-heartedly a community can collectively respond to a crisis.” \n“We met in an old tobacco warehouse on the Grand Canal\, the Fondaco Marcello\,” says Ware. “The walls were still drying and you could see the damage the flooding had caused. We wanted to create an experience exploring our relationship with water – that it’s both essential to all life on Earth\, but increasingly a threat to so many peoples and places.” \nSöderblom says\, “The coverage of the flooding in Venice focused on the disaster\, the damage and the inevitable cost of repairs. But our experience of living through it was more nuanced – the collective resolve of Venetians in the face of this situation was inspirational\, even hopeful. We were keen to avoid the panic often associated with the climate crisis and instead create\, with this installation\, a contemplative space for visitors to consider their relationship with water.” \n \nTHE TECHNOLOGY \nWare’s company Illustrious specialises in three-dimensional\, spatialised sound installations. Ware uses design techniques and software honed over decades to uncanny effect. “What we do goes beyond surround sound\,” says Ware\, “Using 3D sound software (based on a technique called Ambisonics)\, micro-second delays and phase shifts enable us to trick the ear into believing sounds are invisibly located in three-dimensional space. Usually\, when you listen to music or watch a film\, you’re aware of the direction the sound is coming from – the technology we use creates a ‘sound field’ which truly immerses the listener. Even after 20 years I still find it astonishing and quite moving to experience.” \nGabriel Ware says\, “The soundscape features water rituals from around the world – the technology allows us to feel as though we’re experiencing these rituals live – as if they’re happening all around us. Three dimensional sound removes some of the barriers of traditional audio setups to offer incredibly vivid experiences.” \n \nFURTHER INFORMATION \nMartyn Ware \nMARTYN WARE is a musician\, producer\, designer and innovator\, born in 1956 in Sheffield\, UK. He formed The Human League in 1978\, British Electric Foundation in 1980\, and Heaven 17 the same year. With these and others\, Martyn has featured on recordings totaling over 50 million sales worldwide\, establishing himself as a pivotal figure in the development of popular music. Amongst others\, he has produced Tina Turner\, Terence Trent D’Arby\, Chaka Khan\, Erasure\, Marc Almond and Mavis Staples. \nIn 2000\, he founded Illustrious Company with Vince Clarke (Erasure\, Depeche Mode) to explore the creative and commercial possibilities of their unique three-dimensional sound technology. With Illustrious\, Martyn has created immersive sound experiences for clients including the British Council\, The Science Museum\, The Royal Ballet\, Amnesty International\, the V&A Museum\, Mute Records\, BBC TV\, the Royal Observatory Greenwich\, BAFTA\, Museum Of London\, and Tate Britain. He created sonic architectural works in the British Pavilion at the Venice Architectural Biennale in 2006\, and has designed sound installations in extraordinary\, diverse settings across five continents. \nMartyn is a Visiting Professor at C4DM at Queen Mary College\, University of London\, a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art and the Harvard Graduate School of Design\, a patron of Arts & Business\, a member of the LA-based international think-tank group Matter\, a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts\, a member of the Writers Guild of America and a founder member of 5D (a US based organisation promoting all aspects of immersive design). He also lectures extensively on music production\, technology and creativity at universities and colleges across the world including the Red Bull Music Academy. \n \nIllustrious Company \nILLUSTRIOUS COMPANY was formed by Martyn Ware and Vince Clarke in 2000 to create new forms of spatialised sound composition using three dimensional surround-sound systems. SUMMARY:DOLLS by John Lee Bird
DESCRIPTION:Dolls by John Lee Bird\n‘Dolls and idols – a way of existence’ \n\n\nArtist John Lee Bird will be presenting a major solo exhibition\, bringing his new DOLLS project alongside work spanning his 25 year career including large scale paintings\, print\, drawing and film. With influences stemming from film\, cult TV\, performance\, drag and music\, the exhibition will be a celebration of culture\, London\, and the LGBTQ+ community.\n\nJohn says of his work: “The DOLLS project began at the beginning of lockdown with a crippling spinal condition. I felt the urge to return to working with fabric and textiles\, the way I'd begun my art degree in 1997. I found a box of felt in my studio and decided on a whim to make a David Bowie doll… just over 3 months later I’d made 69 Bowie dolls; one to mark each year that "The Man Who Fell To Earth" graced us with his existence. Covering every stage of his career. Celebrating the life of my idol and all the costume collaborators that brought his creativity to our eyes\, an obsessive tribute. My library of Bowie's music as the soundtrack to my endless stitching.\nThe project spiralled\, I wanted to make more\, looking at my vast music collection I decided to dive in and bring everyone to life in felt form. Immersing myself in their sounds as I stitched. Making one a day became an obsession and driving force…and my daily\nentertainment. Then it continued\, I started to look at my favourite films and tv moments\, ALIEN\, The Exorcist\, Twin Peaks\, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and many more. Finally deciding to stop stitching after 3 whole years in March 2023…nearly 800 dolls later.\n\nWorking with textiles gave me a comfortable way to work and an exciting challenge to attempt portraiture of a different kind: over the years I have worked on portraits through various mediums\, including a ten-year project documenting performers in large-scale paintings\, collage work and drawings; but I’ve never explored portraiture in textile work\, until\nnow.\n\nEach doll is 13 inches tall. Lovingly hand-sewn from felt…with beads\, buttons\, wool and occasionally extra fabrics and embellishments. Combining my love of music\, films and fabric gave me a sense of purpose and freedom to play and helped me through the darkest moments.” … Throughout the exhibition run\, there will be evening performances: showcasing some of the\nacts included as dolls. Including live bands\, spoken word and some special cabaret slots by performers from Cabaret vs Cancer who John will be raising funds for.\n\nOn the opening night\, visitors can purchase from a range merchandise to support the exhibition and there will be the launch of the special exhibition edition of the David Bowie Is A Doll book. There will be daily screenings of DOLL FILMS\, artist talks (led by guest ‘DOLL’ tour guides) and weekend workshops.\n\nEXHIBITION DETAILS:\nJOHN LEE BIRD\nDOLLS (and other works)\nAt UGLY DUCK\, 49 Tanner St\, London SE1 3PL\n19 th -23 rd JULY 2023.
