SUMMARY:Resident artists 2025
DESCRIPTION:Grace Quigley is a queer multidisciplinary artist\, poet\, writer\, performer\, drag and movement artist. Their work explores the depths of queerness\, gender\, identity\, community\, neurodivergence\, mental health\, recovery and addiction.\nWith a background in acting\, Grace graduated with a BA Hons from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Their solo show ‘Bluewater’(2022) ran in Edinburgh and London to critical acclaim\, receiving five stars and nominations for two Offies and a Standing Ovation award. \nGrace has performed her work at prestigious stages and galleries. Including; the Roundhouse (London)\, The Hippodrome (Birmingham)\, The Sherman Theatre (Cardiff)\, Dulwich Picture Gallery (Ldn)\, National Theatre Riverbank Stage (Ldn)\, Gilded Balloon (Edinburgh)\, Royal Vauxhall Tavern (Ldn)\, Jewel Box Theatre (New York) and Silverlake Lounge (Los Angeles). Grace is a member of the Roundhouse Poetry Collective and the co-founder of Queer Noise CIC\, a performance collective that hosts events\, talks and workshops across the UK. \nThe project: Drawing from archival research at the Bishopsgate Institute\, (working title) ‘On Our Backs’ takes inspiration from the iconic lesbian\, 1980s magazine of the same name. Using its print articles and images\, the performance interrogates and celebrates my obsession and experience with queer dyke femme expression\, and desire. The piece includes a variety of perspectives on femme identity. Blending movement\, lipsync\, collage\, shadow work\, and cabaret-style elements\, it brings the magazine’s groundbreaking\, humorous\, and provocative stories to life. Engaging with the audience directly\, the work invites participation in exploring the same questions and ideas that defined the spirit of the original publication.

SUMMARY:Red Thread to Hold – Cherry Velour
DESCRIPTION:Red Thread to Hold – Cherry Velour\nRed Thread to Hold is a durational performance concerned with exploring how physical endurance\, consent\, and relational care can intersect within a performance context. Informed by kink practice and somatic methodologies\, the piece centres on the act of hook suspension as a way of examining how the body can become a site for trust\, vulnerability\, and mutual responsibility. \nAcross up to two hours\, Cherry Velour’s body will be suspended in a web of knotted rope\, held aloft only by hooks pierced through her skin. This state of suspension is not presented as spectacle; it is an invitation to consider what it means to be held: by rope\, by flesh\, by the gaze of others. The work asks how pain might function not as a signal of harm\, but as a tool for communication\, transformation\, and consensual intimacy. \nThe performance does not aim to provide answers. Instead\, it opens space for witnessing. Through slow\, sustained presence\, it resists passive viewership and builds a shared environment in which bodily reactions – such as tremors\, breath\, or stillness – become part of a live negotiation between artist and audience. \nArtist \nCherry Velour is a queer Palestinian-American artist based in Brighton. Her work spans performance\, body-based installation\, and collaborative process. She is interested in practices that explore transformation through discomfort\, with a focus on care\, surrender\, and power. \nPlease note: this performance includes blood and body suspension.

SUMMARY:MYTO Episode 2 presents SOLARPUNK: Decolonisation
DESCRIPTION:MYTO\nMYTO Episode 2 presents SOLARPUNK: Decolonisation  \nMyto is a multimodal organism reimagining learning through collaborative practice\, spanning music\, performance\, contemporary art and club culture. For their second episode\, Myto teams up with Ugly Duck to bring to life a two day exhibition surrounding the theme of Solarpunk.  \nSolarpunk is a genre of speculative fiction and an emerging social movement that envisions a hopeful future rooted in sustainability and equity. It stands in contrast to dystopian narratives\, focusing on how human ingenuity and cooperation can address the ecological and social crises of our time.  \nMyto aims to bring together artists from different diasporas who explore decolonisation in their practice and to create a space of convergence for their work. Through this\, they hope to ignite a conversation\, between the participants and the audience\, on our cultural resonance and how we can build collective spirituality. This two day takeover will activate this reclaimed disused factory as a space where we can envision alternative futures and take a step into making this into reality.  \nThe exhibition will be held across two days at Ugly Duck on 22nd and 23rd March 2025. The exhibition will include performances\, sculptures\, installations\, film screenings\, workshops and a “circular” discussion on decolonisation\, global convergence\, decentralisation and Solarpunk.  \nCurated by Mahsa Salali \nProduced by Justin Rivera and Andrea Obinna Pelagatti \nInstagram  \nSaturday 22 March 6 – 10pm ( Ticketed ) \nPerformances \n° Zara Hudson Kozdój – live experimental cello\n° M. SUMMARY:Physarum Polycephalum\, net_work reconfigurations
DESCRIPTION:Physarum Polycephalum\, neT_work reconfigurations\nGoldsmiths BSc Digital Arts Computing \nThis 2025 exhibition by the Digital Art’s computing cohort explores the extraordinary ability of physarum polycephalum a single-cell slime mould and its ability to adapt to it’s environment no matter how intricate or complex for the sake of efficiency. \nOur work through this lens serves to be viewed as challenging the centrality of humans and how perspectives may shift when coming to different understandings of life\, intelligence and connectivity. \nThrough the fusion of art\, science\, and technology\, Net_work Reconfiguration encourages the viewer to ponder the current boundaries between biological and digital networks. By highlighting an organism which is capable of reconfiguring itself in reach of adaptation for efficiency\, we can learn from this work. \nJoin us in reimagining the world through the metaphorical lens of physarum polycephalum where the “blob” becomes a guide to reconfigure our understanding of networks\, intelligence and the posthuman condition. \n22nd May 6 pm – 10:00 pm \n23rd – 25th May from 11 am \nMore info

This is not just an exhibition — it is remembrance and rebirth. Over 50 artists now stand together\, voices rising through siege and silence\, forging a collective act of cultural survival. \nعلى أنقاض هذا العالم | Upon the Ruins of the World is the first official exhibition of the Gaza Biennale\, presented and co-lead in London by Jinnaah UK\, a grassroots collective of artists\, activists\, and cultural workers in solidarity with the Palestinian people\, answering the call of the Gaza Biennale\, organising in the UK in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Over 50 Gazan artists—whose work was born in siege\, in mourning\, in survival—will be exhibited together for the first time anywhere in the world. It is remembrance. It is rebellion. It is rebirth. \nSince Gaza Biennale’s announcement and Jinnaah UK’s partnership in November 2024\, the Gaza Biennale – Jinnaah UK has unfolded across public space—in projections and bilingual interventions on the walls of major institutions\, transforming the city into a living archive of cultural resistance. \nNow\, for the first time\, this work enters a dedicated exhibition space. Through installations\, live-streamed conversations\, talks\, workshops\, participatory works\, and multilingual programming in both Arabic and English\, this landmark event invites audiences into the heart of the Gaza Biennale. \nIn a time of increasing hostility toward Arab\, Muslim and Palestinian identities\, the exhibition’s bilingual nature is deliberate: to resist invisibility\, assert presence\, and honour linguistic and cultural integrity. \nHighlights of the public program include live discussions and workshops with artists in Gaza\, topics include art\, race\, fragmented Palestinian identity and disability\, and conversations on cultural labour under siege. Guest speakers include Yara Eid and others to be announced\, including artists from inside Gaza. \nA full schedule including ticket booking can be found[here]. \nIn the absence of institutional courage\, this exhibition affirms what communities already know: that people rise\, and art builds worlds. It is a call to the UK cultural sector—to uplift Palestinian artists\, sever ties with complicit institutions\, and speak out against genocide. \n“There is no other project like this in the world. The time is now to highlight and make room for the most critical artists of our time.” \nSpokesperson – Gaza Biennale – Jinnaah UK \nWe are raising vital funds for our work and for the artists of the Gaza Biennale. Donations — offered with generosity and love — will help us continue holding space for voices\, visions\, and stories that must not be lost. \nWhen lands are silenced and lives made invisible in the main stream\, what often remains are the stories — the culture\, the language\, the art. This is also what we are protecting. This too is what we are building. And we need you with us. \nThe exhibition is supported by:\n‘heart’ Al Risan Art Museum (‘h’ARAM) aka Forbidden Museum\, Agent.C\, Palestinian Youth Movement\, RESOLVE Collective\, Street Sound System\, Black Obsidian Sound System (B.O.S.S)\, TEAM\, White Kite Collective\, multitudes.coop\, Art 4 a Free Palestine\, Shams and Rise\, XR Art Blockers\, MAKAN\, BOLD MELON COLLECTIVE\, Yards Theatre\, Kunstraum\, UGLY DUCK\, and Fatema Zeinab (one of the Filton 18). \n

SUMMARY:Some Kind Of Bliss
DESCRIPTION:Some Kind of Bliss is not a performance you watch. \nIt’s a zone you enter. There’s no stage. Only presence. No protagonist—only fragments. \nRooted in the lived experiences of the Pan-Asian queer diaspora in London\, this piece reclaims small acts of transgression—taking an onion\, leaving a broken speaker\, a fake eyelash in the sink—as gestures of survival\, desire\, and self-making in the face of urban alienation. \nInspired by Deleuze and Guattari’s theory of the Rhizome\, the work builds a post-linear\, anti-hierarchical structure. There is no fixed center. No clear start or end. Each performer generates their own territory. Each audience member\, by entering\, reshapes the space. It’s self-organizing. Nomadic. Improvised. \nWe don’t just talk about queerness—we queer performance itself. The structure\, the temporality\, the syntax. In this performance\, language breaks into what I call a divaricate tongue—cursed\, forked\, overflowing with semantics but void of clear meaning. When we speak in the borrowed tongue of another’s system\, our words crack. Our grammar glitches. But grammar never saved us. Only gesture does. \nThe toilet becomes a symbolic stage—a space without spectators. We shit\, we clean\, we think. These gestures\, in their solitude\, become public. Intimate spaces turn into sites of collective awkwardness\, overexposure\, refusal. It’s not purification—it’s revelation. \nThis is a place of displacement—not just thematically\, but structurally\, temporally\, emotionally. It moves sideways. It doesn’t belong. But it connects. We are not interested in being part of a named form. Once you’ve felt the soft\, undefined structure of queer community\, you can’t go back. You don’t want to. – \n  \nDirected by Shuwent @shuwent_ \nProduction: \nSherr(Yixue Gao) @yixue.exe \nPeng Yuanqinghe @penguin0o0oo \nPerformers (A-Z) \nBabyangelanqi @babyangelanqii \nCalvin @calvintcao \nHuman @humanitself \nMars @chmmars \nQingqing Liu @weeeekdu \nShuya \nShuwent @shuwent_ \nCostume \nHuman @humanitself \nLesslie @leslesslie \nArt Design \nRuby @rubyyo.o \nMusic Live \nGreg @gre9_d \nPrensented by Pharos \n@pharos_london \nExhibition \nThe Great Doll：Two-Year Retrospective of PHAROS\nOutside of the performance\, we’re also presenting a two-year retrospective exhibition at the ground floor. \nFrom Beijing to London\, Pharos celebrates over two years of radical queer performance with a retrospective of our core series. This exhibition revisits five works from the VOL performance series and selected moments from Golden Prostitute\, tracing our evolving language of resistance\, ritual\, and re-imagined identity. Through theatre\, drag\, and embodied mythologies\, we reflect on what it means to gather\, to fracture\, and to begin again.\n\n \n* We warmly welcome audiences from neurodiverse\, LGBTQ+\, cross-cultural\, and disabled communities. This is a space for shared presence and care. \nAccessibility:\n• The venue is partially wheelchair accessible. Please contact us in advance for assistance.\n• The performance involves standing and moving through different zones. \nNeurodiversity Friendly： This is a sensory-rich environment with fluctuating sound and lighting. Quiet zones are available. Please reach out for a sensory guide or support.

SUMMARY:Fading Out of Dead Air
DESCRIPTION:Fading Out of Dead Air (Transmissions for the Necropolis) \n3 hrs durational performance by Martin O’Brien \nA scratchy sound of white noise emanating from a small radio fills the dark room. A faint voice comes through. It sounds like nothing from this world\, as if death itself was speaking. Somewhere else\, sickly patients lay in hospital beds in hell. They don’t understand why they are still sick. They listen to the hospital radio\, but it doesn’t play their favourite songs. Instead\, they listen to the sounds of a life once lived.   \nDrawing inspiration from hospital radio and stories of ghosts heard through analogue technologies\, this 3 hour performance by Martin O’Brien explores the human desire to communicate\, and record. In a strange and eerie landscape\, O’Brien shuffles around\, recording and playing half heard voices and unholy sounds. \nMartin O’Brien is an artist and zombie. He works across performance\, writing and video art. His work uses long durational actions\, short speculative texts and critical rants\, and performance processes in order to explore death and dying\, what it means to be born with a life shortening disease\, and the philosophical implications of living longer than expected. \nPhoto credits: Martin O’Brien\, Fading Out of Dead Air (Transmissions for the Necropolis)\, Whitechapel Gallery\, 2023. Photo by Marco Berardi. \n\nPlease note: this work contains nudity\, sexual content\, and deals with issues of death. \n\nPresented as part of A Collective Archive\n12–15 June 2025 \n\nA Collective Archive is a four-day celebration of artistic practices\, shared resistance\, and the many communities that have shaped Ugly Duck over the past thirteen years. SUMMARY:Ugly Duck Closure
DESCRIPTION:After more than ten years of reimagining what an arts space can be\, Ugly Duck will be closing its doors on August 12 as our wonderful Tanner Street Warehouse will shortly be being its redevelopment journey \nWhat started as a temporary project grew into something much larger—a home for experimental\, interdisciplinary\, and socially conscious work. From day one\, we set out to create space for underrepresented voices\, meaningful dialogues and artistic care. We want to take this opportunity to say thank you  to the artists\, audiences\, and communities who brought it to life\, and helped our  vision become a reality. \nUgly Duck was never just about the building. It was about what happened inside it: moments of joy\, resistance\, vulnerability\, connection\, and transformation. Together\, we made room for the kind of art—and the kind of conversations—that don’t always fit within traditional institutions. \nWe are incredibly proud of what we’ve built and profoundly grateful to everyone who’s been part of this journey. While the space itself is coming to an end\, the legacy we created together lives on—in memories\, in future projects\, and in the belief that something different is always possible. \nThank you\,\nThe Ugly Duck Team \nFuture contact: \nUgly Duck Closure Enquiries: director@uglyduck.org.uk \nHiring Tanner Street: hello@4749studios.com \nRehearsal Space with Chisenhale Dance: spacehire@chisenhaledancespace.co.uk \nArt projects & @disturbance: Deen Atger deen.atger@gmail.com \nKaty Darling : Linkedin
