SUMMARY:Fading Out of Dead Air
DESCRIPTION:Fading Out of Dead Air (Transmissions for the Necropolis) \n3 hrs durational performance by Martin O’Brien \nA scratchy sound of white noise emanating from a small radio fills the dark room. A faint voice comes through. It sounds like nothing from this world\, as if death itself was speaking. Somewhere else\, sickly patients lay in hospital beds in hell. They don’t understand why they are still sick. They listen to the hospital radio\, but it doesn’t play their favourite songs. Instead\, they listen to the sounds of a life once lived.   \nDrawing inspiration from hospital radio and stories of ghosts heard through analogue technologies\, this 3 hour performance by Martin O’Brien explores the human desire to communicate\, and record. In a strange and eerie landscape\, O’Brien shuffles around\, recording and playing half heard voices and unholy sounds. \nMartin O’Brien is an artist and zombie. He works across performance\, writing and video art. His work uses long durational actions\, short speculative texts and critical rants\, and performance processes in order to explore death and dying\, what it means to be born with a life shortening disease\, and the philosophical implications of living longer than expected. \nPhoto credits: Martin O’Brien\, Fading Out of Dead Air (Transmissions for the Necropolis)\, Whitechapel Gallery\, 2023. Photo by Marco Berardi. \n\nPlease note: this work contains nudity\, sexual content\, and deals with issues of death. \n\nPresented as part of A Collective Archive\n12–15 June 2025 \n\nA Collective Archive is a four-day celebration of artistic practices\, shared resistance\, and the many communities that have shaped Ugly Duck over the past thirteen years. What began as a temporary project space became a home for interdisciplinary\, experimental\, and politically engaged work—a space for collaboration\, risk\, and ideas outside the margins of mainstream culture. \nWe invite you to join us for this final chapter: a gathering\, a gesture of gratitude\, and a call to collective imagination. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme: \nThursday 12 June (6–10 pm)\nJoin us for the opening soirée with an exhibition featuring 15+ multidisciplinary artists\, immersive installations\, and live performances by Biogal and Helga Alarcón. \nFriday 13 June\nExhibition open: 1–6 pm\nPerformance Night (6–10 pm)\nMartin O’Brien presents Fading Out of Dead Air (3-hour durational performance) \nSaturday 14 June\nA Collective Collage Workshop (2–5 pm) with Bold Mellon Collective\n(All works donated to Bishopsgate Institute) \nGushing with Gabby (5–6 pm)\nA Montez Press Radio broadcast hosted by Gabriela Cala-Lesina with Deen Atger\, Biogal and Oduenyi Nwike. \nBold Mellon Collective Commissions (6–7 pm)\nPerformances by Helin Karabil\, Hḗrā Santos\, Emilia Nurmulhamet & Dear Annie \nTribe Incorporated: Sound and Poetry (7–8 pm) \nThe Last Dance (8:30 pm–midnight)\nMusic: Josh Quinton & friends\nPerformance: Sophie Brain\n(Join us for a final celebration in this incredible building as we turn the garage into a dancefloor!) \nSunday 15 June\nExhibition open: 1–6 pm\nClosing Performances (3–6 pm)\nChloé Filani\, Puer Deorum & Joy Kincaid \nThis project is a celebration of what has been possible and what can be done again. A reflection on subversive practices in a gentrified city. Not from a place of mourning\, but from a desire to imagine otherwise. \n\nThis event is the culmination of a community-driven archival project we designed to honour & conserve our legacy of showcasing daring & avant-garde art crucial to London’s LGBTQIA+ community. Thanks to the support of Arts Council England this will include the publishing of a book\, a mixed media archive and concludes with this week long exhibition\, performances & talks event to celebrate the impact of UD together.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtists \nBiogal\, Blanca Regina\, Chloé Filani\, Claye Bowler\, Elodie Gatacre & Aster Munro\, Fiona Albrow\, Georgia Semple\, Hazel Blair\, Jean Cleverley\, John Lee Bird\, Josh Quinton\, Joy Kincaid\, Luis M.S Santos\, Martin O’Brien\, Puer Deorum\, Rough Fabrics\, Svar Simpson\, Oduenyi Nwikke\, Shadi Al’Atallah\, Sophie Brain\, Nurul Wardani\, Adam Krishan Popli … \n\n\n\nSpecial Partnership Mention: Southwark Council & Bold Melon & Queer Art Projects \n\n\nSupported by Arts Council England

SUMMARY:Ugly Duck Closure
DESCRIPTION:After more than ten years of reimagining what an arts space can be\, Ugly Duck will be closing its doors on August 12 as our wonderful Tanner Street Warehouse will shortly be being its redevelopment journey \nWhat started as a temporary project grew into something much larger—a home for experimental\, interdisciplinary\, and socially conscious work. From day one\, we set out to create space for underrepresented voices\, meaningful dialogues and artistic care. We want to take this opportunity to say thank you  to the artists\, audiences\, and communities who brought it to life\, and helped our  vision become a reality. \nUgly Duck was never just about the building. It was about what happened inside it: moments of joy\, resistance\, vulnerability\, connection\, and transformation. Together\, we made room for the kind of art—and the kind of conversations—that don’t always fit within traditional institutions. \nWe are incredibly proud of what we’ve built and profoundly grateful to everyone who’s been part of this journey. While the space itself is coming to an end\, the legacy we created together lives on—in memories\, in future projects\, and in the belief that something different is always possible. \nThank you\,\nThe Ugly Duck Team \nFuture contact: \nUgly Duck Closure Enquiries: director@uglyduck.org.uk \nHiring Tanner Street: hello@4749studios.com \nRehearsal Space with Chisenhale Dance: spacehire@chisenhaledancespace.co.uk \nArt projects & @disturbance: Deen Atger deen.atger@gmail.com \nKaty Darling : Linkedin
